It is often a ferrite core, also called a ferrite choke or bead. The ferrite inside the plastic housing helps suppress high-frequency electrical noise on the cord. But looks alone cannot confirm what a particular pod is: it could also be a molded cord protector or another part.
What a ferrite core does
A power cord can carry unwanted electrical noise, and in some circumstances act as an antenna that picks up or radiates interference. A ferrite core surrounds the cable and adds frequency-dependent impedance, helping reduce some of that noise. The visible plastic shell may simply protect the ferrite inside.
It is not a surge protector and does not create or regulate power. Its effect depends on the ferrite material, the cable arrangement, and the frequencies involved. Fair-Rite describes ferrite cores as a way to couple high-frequency resistance into a cable and reduce common-mode current and associated radiation or pickup (Fair-Rite technical note, revised October 11, 2023).
How to tell what the pod might be
A pod molded around the cord, away from the plug’s flexible bend protection, is consistent with a ferrite choke, particularly if it has no visible switch or connection. That is only a clue, not a definitive identification. Without a photo or the tool’s make and model, the exact part cannot be confirmed.

Do not open a sealed pod or cut, splice, or otherwise alter a mains cord to investigate. Check the tool manual or contact the manufacturer if the part is loose, cracked, unusually hot, or otherwise concerning.
What it can—and cannot—fix
A ferrite core is intended to suppress certain high-frequency interference. It will not repair damaged insulation, an intermittent connection, an overheating cord, or a failing tool. If the cord is damaged or getting hot, stop using the tool and arrange qualified repair; do not continue using it on the assumption that the pod is the problem.

If you need a replacement or add-on
Use the tool maker’s specified part where available. Ferrite cores are not interchangeable just because they fit around a cable: the inner diameter must suit the cord, and the material and construction must be appropriate for the interference frequencies. A split or snap-on core can be installed without disconnecting the cable, but adding one does not establish that the tool is electrically safe or compliant. Bel Fuse notes that final system testing is needed to confirm emissions performance (Bel Fuse engineering article on ferrite beads).
Manufacturer figures illustrate why the exact part matters, but do not specify the unknown tool’s core. Fair-Rite’s 2023 note says standard ferrite cores are generally most effective above 10 MHz, describes Type 75 material for EMI suppression from 200 kHz to 30 MHz, and gives an example core with peak impedance of 160 Ω around 1.6 MHz. Those are manufacturer-specific examples, not ratings for your tool’s cord pod.

When to ask for help
If you are unsure whether the pod is a ferrite core, or it has become damaged or loose, identify the tool’s model and consult its manual, manufacturer, or a qualified repair service. A clear photo and the pod’s position on the cord may help identify it, but avoid testing by dismantling or modifying the cord.
