The familiar garden gnome is a nineteenth-century German garden ornament, not an ancient relic. Its commercial history is closely tied to Gräfenroda, a pottery-making town in Thuringia—but the first maker and exact starting date are disputed. One museum dates serial production to 1872; the Griebel family’s account gives a later, gradual development in the 1880s. Earlier garden miniatures and folklore figures help explain the background, but they do not establish a single direct origin.
When did garden gnomes first appear?
The recognizable garden gnome emerged in Germany in the second half of the nineteenth century. The disagreement is over how to date its beginning and whom to credit—not whether the modern commercial ornament is much newer than the folklore and garden traditions that preceded it.
The LWL-Industriemuseum says August Heissner began serially producing garden gnomes in Gräfenroda in 1872, initially marketing them as “Gnom.” Zwergstatt Gräfenroda, the Griebel family’s maker and museum, says Philipp Griebel founded his firm in 1874, and that Griebel and other local modelers developed the recognizable Gräfenroda gnome during 1880–1890. The company account explicitly disputes the claim that the familiar figure was already established there in the 1870s. These are different institutional histories, so it is more accurate to describe Gräfenroda as a key production center than to name one settled inventor or launch year. LWL-Industriemuseum; Zwergstatt Gräfenroda.
What came before the familiar garden gnome?
Garden miniatures
Miniature figures appeared in aristocratic gardens before the commercial gnome. The LWL-Industriemuseum notes Baroque stone miniatures as part of that earlier garden-ornament tradition. Their existence provides context for placing small figures in gardens; it does not show that the red-capped, bearded garden gnome already existed in its later form.

Folklore beings
Gnome-like beings in European fables and myths are often described as earth or nature spirits associated with hidden knowledge, craft skill, or elemental powers. That folklore made the idea of a small, capable helper familiar, but the sources do not establish a direct line from any one mythic figure to the mass-produced garden ornament. The Germanisches Nationalmuseum’s Alraunmännchen offers another example of an earlier magical humanlike object: the museum dates it probably to the seventeenth or eighteenth century, with rearrangement in the nineteenth, and connects it to mandrake legends. It is a distinct object, not a proven garden-gnome prototype. LWL-Industriemuseum; Germanisches Nationalmuseum.
Why does the classic gnome look like a worker?
The familiar figure is small-bodied, bearded, and topped with a pointed cap, often shown carrying gardening tools or doing another task. The LWL-Industriemuseum presents it as a hard-working helper and friend to people. Zwergstatt Gräfenroda offers a more local explanation: the gnome’s proportions and beard recall adults and children working in low underground mining passages, while the red cap reflects miners’ clothing. That is the maker’s account of the design’s inspiration, rather than a universally established explanation. LWL-Industriemuseum; Zwergstatt Gräfenroda museum.

How did gnome production and use change?
From local craft to broader circulation
Gräfenroda’s gnomes became commercial garden figures, and production spread beyond their original setting. Zwergstatt describes their later appearance in urban allotment gardens, where the figures took on varied roles: gardening, fishing, playing music, reading, or simply daydreaming. The garden gnome was therefore not limited to one pose or one kind of garden.
War, postwar revival, and plastic
The LWL-Industriemuseum describes production slowing between 1914 and 1945, followed by a revival in the 1950s. It says lower-priced plastic figures from the 1960s helped bring gnomes to a wider audience, alongside continuing hand-painted clay figures. Zwergstatt’s own history recounts damage to production and local prosperity during the world wars; it says 15 manufacturers remained after the First World War. Its account also describes production restrictions during the GDR period, an initial export focus, and nationalization of the family business in 1972. Those details reflect the company’s historical account. LWL-Industriemuseum; Zwergstatt Gräfenroda.

How did garden gnomes become popular—and controversial?
The Garden Museum describes gnomes appearing at British country houses, with the rock garden at Lamport Hall helping establish the fashion. It interprets the figures’ later decline in fashion partly through their association with Germany during the world wars, followed by the Disney boom and the spread of inexpensive plastic figures. That is the museum’s account of a shift in taste, not a single-cause explanation that applies everywhere. Garden Museum.
Gnomes have never meant exactly the same thing to every viewer. The LWL-Industriemuseum describes them as both loved and ridiculed, and notes disputes over traditional versus modern designs, clay versus plastic, and decoration versus visual intrusion. The Garden Museum likewise presents them as objects that can be read as charming or unfashionable. A figure can signal affection for a familiar garden tradition to its owner while appearing kitsch or overly conventional to someone else. LWL-Industriemuseum; Garden Museum.

What historical figures and numbers can be stated with confidence?
Dates and totals need their original context. The figures below describe what the named institutions report, not a universally agreed chronology or current count.
| Claim | What the source says | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1872 | LWL-Industriemuseum dates August Heissner’s start of serial gnome production in Gräfenroda to this year. | An exhibition account, not an uncontested first-making date. Source. |
| 1874 | Zwergstatt says Philipp Griebel founded his own firm. | A company-history date; it does not settle the origin dispute. Source. |
| 1880–1890 | Zwergstatt says Griebel and other local modelers contributed to developing the recognizable Gräfenroda gnome. | The maker’s account describes a gradual development rather than a single inventor. Source. |
| About 1900 | The Garden Museum dates its Heissner fishing gnome to around this time. | The museum calls it the oldest gnome in its own collection, not the oldest surviving gnome overall. Source. |
| About 25 million | LWL-Industriemuseum reported this estimate for garden gnomes in Germany. | Published on its 2002 exhibition page; it is not a current population count. Source. |
| One in two respondents aged 18–59 | LWL-Industriemuseum reported that a 1991 survey found this share pleased by a garden gnome. | The survey year and age range matter; the result is not a present-day measure. Source. |
Taken together, the history is less a tale of one inventor than of a recognizable garden ornament taking shape through local production, changing materials, and changing tastes. Its folklore associations are older than the object itself, while its continuing appeal—and its reputation for kitsch—depends on who displays it and where.
