A Tower Garden is a branded vertical growing system that grows plants without soil. Plants sit in ports along a tower, and a pump delivers water and dissolved minerals to their roots. The manufacturer calls the method aeroponic. It is one product within the wider category of vertical hydroponic towers, so the name refers to a specific brand, not to every vertical garden.
How the system delivers water and nutrients
Hydroponics means growing plants without soil while supplying mineral nutrients through water. University extension material describes vertical hydroponics as nutrient-rich water fed through a vertical system and collected in a reservoir below. University of Nevada, Reno lists light, air, water, nutrients, heat, space, and electricity as the core needs of any hydroponic setup.
Tower Garden says its approach is aeroponic: roots are held in air and periodically misted with nutrient solution, and the company describes its system as delivering water, oxygen, and minerals to the roots. Not every vertical tower works this way. Oklahoma State University Extension describes tower designs that use a porous growing medium and drip solution from above. When comparing products, check which delivery method a given tower uses rather than assuming all towers mist roots.
What a FLEX kit includes
According to the manufacturer’s FLEX product page, the package includes a submersible pump, a timer, a mineral blend, net pots, and starter materials. The pump and timer mean the system runs on electricity, and the reservoir must be topped up and the nutrient solution maintained over time.

What grows well, and what does not
Tower Garden states that the system can grow vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers. Its examples include leafy greens, basil, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, and some flowers. The manufacturer’s FAQ names root crops, grapevines, bushes, and trees as poor fits for the system.
The company’s growing guidance index includes crop guides for arugula, basil, cucumber, eggplant, mustard greens, peppers, spinach, Swiss chard, and tomato. It also covers seedlings, assembly, harvest, cleaning, and troubleshooting.

Light requirements by crop type
- Fruiting crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash: the manufacturer recommends about eight hours of full sun daily for best productivity.
- Greens and herbs: these tolerate less light, according to the manufacturer, but may be less productive under it.
- Indoor growing: indoor towers need adequate artificial light. Tower Garden offers an LED grow light kit for this purpose.
Space, capacity, and water quality
Capacity and dimensions depend on the model, so always name the model when quoting a figure. The manufacturer’s general FAQ states that HOME holds up to 32 plants and FLEX holds up to 20 plants in the base configuration, and that extension options change capacity.
| Item | HOME (per manufacturer FAQ) | FLEX (per FLEX product page) |
|---|---|---|
| Plant capacity, base configuration | Up to 32 plants | Up to 20 plants; 20 planting ports |
| Reservoir capacity | Not stated in the manufacturer FAQ | 20 gallons |
| Assembled dimensions | Not stated in the manufacturer FAQ | 30 × 30 × 50 inches (listing); 30 × 30-inch footprint and 55-inch height (FAQ section on the same page) |
| Listed price | Not stated in the sources reviewed | $670 when checked in 2026, shipping calculated at checkout |
The FLEX product page gives two sets of dimensions that do not match. One section lists assembled dimensions of 30 by 30 by 50 inches, while another FAQ section on the same page describes a 30 by 30-inch footprint and a 55-inch height. Confirm the current dimensions with the manufacturer before ordering or planning a fixed installation space.

- The GreenStalk system is proud to be designed and manufactured completely in East TN. Made with high quality, BPA-free, UV-resistant plastic with a 5 year warranty
- To water the entire system use GreenStalk’s patented watering system: simply fill to the 5 tier mark on the top water reservoir to water all the tiers below.
- Easily grows a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, strawberries and flowers including potatoes, lettuce, corn, and tomatoes
- The GreenStalk is soil-based so no special solutions or electricity needed – just fill with 5 cubic feet of your favorite potting mix
- GreenStalk is the ONLY system that waters all tiers at the same time. Other stackable gardens over-saturate the top tiers to get to the ones on the bottom.
Water quality affects plant health. Tower Garden advises against heavily chlorinated, very hard, or softened water. If your tap water falls into one of these categories, the manufacturer’s guidance points toward using another water source.
Indoor or outdoor use
The manufacturer says its towers can be used indoors or outdoors. Outdoors, the main requirement is sunlight meeting the crop’s needs. Indoors, plants need artificial light. Oklahoma State University Extension notes that vertical hydroponics suits spaces where floor area is limited, such as a sunny balcony or patio, and that indoor use requires lights.

Organic status and performance claims
The Tower Garden FAQ says the system cannot be classified as organic because organic growing requires soil. This is the manufacturer’s own position, and produce grown in a Tower Garden should not be described as certified organic on the basis of the product alone.
The manufacturer’s FAQ also makes comparative claims about growth speed and efficiency. Independent, controlled home-use testing of a specific Tower Garden model’s yield or water use was not found in the material reviewed for this article. Treat those comparisons as company statements, not as universal yield or water-saving figures. The FLEX reservoir (20 gallons) and planting capacity (20 ports) are product specifications, not performance results.

Tower Garden or a DIY tower?
Oklahoma State University Extension describes a do-it-yourself vertical hydroponic tower that can be built from food-grade materials. It is a separate approach from the branded system. The choice usually comes down to the following points:
- Delivery method: a branded aeroponic tower versus a DIY tower that may use a porous medium and drip flow.
- Upfront cost: a listed price for a branded kit versus the materials and time for a homemade build.
- Footprint and capacity: the number of plants a given model or build can hold in the space you have.
- Light source: direct sunlight, artificial grow lights, or both.
- Upkeep: water, nutrient, and pump maintenance on a schedule you can keep.
- Crop choice: the manufacturer’s list of suited and unsuited crops, which may differ from what you want to grow.
The company’s About page states that Tower Garden became an independent company in 2024.
Buying and checking current details
The FLEX listing showed $670 when checked in 2026, with shipping calculated at checkout. Prices and availability change, so verify both on the manufacturer’s site before buying. Confirm the model name, plant capacity, and dimensions at the same time, because the FLEX page’s dimension figures differ between sections.
The Bottom Line
A Tower Garden is a branded, soil-free vertical system that uses aeroponic delivery, suits many leafy crops, herbs, and fruiting vegetables, and requires light, clean water, electricity, and a defined space. Check the model’s capacity, dimensions, and price directly with the manufacturer before buying, and treat its performance and organic statements as the company’s own position.
