For chicken eggs, set a forced-air incubator to about 99.5°F or a still-air incubator to about 102°F. The right setting depends on whether a fan circulates the air. Check the incubator manual, and measure temperature where the eggs are—not just at the thermostat display.
What temperature should I set my egg incubator to?
First identify the incubator type: forced-air models use a fan to circulate warm air; still-air models do not. For chicken eggs, University of Florida IFAS Extension recommends 99.5°F for forced-air and 102°F for still-air incubators. Mississippi State University Extension gives a forced-air range of 99–100°F and 102°F for still-air units. These are close but not identical recommendations, so use the setting specified for your model rather than averaging figures from different sources.
| Incubator type | Chicken-egg temperature guidance | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Forced-air (fan-circulated) | About 99.5°F; Mississippi State gives 99–100°F | UF/IFAS Extension and Mississippi State University Extension; operating recommendations, not a universal setting for every model. |
| Still-air (no circulating fan) | About 102°F; University of Maine gives about 101.5°F | UF/IFAS Extension and University of Maine Cooperative Extension; recommendations vary modestly, so check the manual. |
Does a still-air incubator need a different temperature?
Yes. Without a fan, warm air layers inside the incubator, making the temperature higher near the tops of the eggs than lower down. Mississippi State Extension therefore recommends placing the thermometer bulb at the level of the egg tops in a still-air unit. Keep it from touching an egg or the heat source. For forced-air units, follow the manual’s specified thermometer position; do not assume the thermostat reading equals the temperature at the eggs.
University of Maine Cooperative Extension describes approximately 99.5°F for forced-draft and 101.5°F for still-air operation, while other extension guidance gives slightly different figures. This variation is a reason to use the incubator manufacturer’s instructions and correct thermometer placement rather than applying a number without regard to the unit.

- 【STABLE TEMPERATURE】: The circulating airflow system driven by a strong fan provides a stable temperature condition for the eggs.
- 【EXTERNAL WATER REFILLING】: Refilling water without opening the incubator lid, avoid causing the interior temperature & humidty suddenly drop a lot.
- 【BUILT-IN EGG CANDLER】: A convenient way for you to observe the development of embryos, no need to buy additional egg candler.
- 【AUTOMATIC EGG TURNER】: Side-to-side turning the eggs automatically at 60 minutes interval, and also can auto-stop turning 3 days before hatching to avoid excess turning.
How to stabilize and check the temperature before adding eggs
- Identify the airflow type and consult the manual. Confirm whether the unit has a circulating fan and find the manufacturer’s temperature target and thermometer-placement directions.
- Run the empty incubator first. UF/IFAS recommends at least 24 hours of operation before setting eggs. Maine Extension suggests 48 hours and repeated temperature and humidity checks.
- Verify the thermometer. Compare it with a reliable thermometer and account for any difference. Illinois Extension cautions that a one-degree measurement error over a 21-day chicken incubation can interfere with embryo growth.
- Check the reading at the appropriate location. In a still-air incubator, measure at egg-top level; in a forced-air model, use the location specified by the manual. Let the unit stabilize after adjustments before relying on a new reading.
Why accurate temperature matters
Overheating can harm embryos quickly. Mississippi State Extension warns that temperatures one or two degrees above its recommendations may kill embryos within 15–30 minutes, depending on how far above the target the temperature rises and the embryo’s stage. This is extension guidance, not a guarantee that every egg or incubator will respond identically. Avoid making large thermostat adjustments based on a single unverified reading.

Humidity, ventilation, egg turning and sanitation also affect hatch outcomes. For chicken eggs, UF/IFAS recommends 58–60% relative humidity from setting until three days before hatch, then 65% or higher during the final three days. It also recommends turning eggs at least three times a day through day 18, then stopping for the final three days. Follow the incubator manual and species-specific guidance, since these figures are not a substitute for instructions for a different bird or a particular model.
Quick Recap

- 【Constant Temperature & Humidity Control】The chicken incubators for hatching eggs LED display screen allows for easy temperature setting and reading in Fahrenheit, enhancing convenience to maintain perfect conditions, ensuring reliable and consistent hatch success with minimal effort. No need to buy additional temperature hygrometer meter to monitor incubator.
- 【Automatic Egg Turner for Better Hatch Rates】 The chicken egg incubator through an automatic egg turning system mimics natural conditions (Optional automatic turning frequency: Once every 60, 120, 180 minutes), improving hatch success by turning eggs at the right intervals and stopping three days before hatching to prevent over-turning.
- 【External Water Refill for Stable Humidity】 Unlike other incubator for chicken eggs, our chicken incubators for hatching eggs feature an external water filling system, which allows you to add water without opening the egg incubator, ensuring a stable humidity level throughout the incubation cycle, and improve the hatching success rate.
- 【Egg Candling for Monitoring Development】 The chicken egg incubator contains a built-in candling feature that allows you to check the embryos during the incubation process, helping you to monitor their development and identify any potential problems at each stage.
- 【360° Transparent View for Monitoring & Easy to clean】 These chicken incubator's clear transparent design provides a 360° view, allowing you to easily monitor the hatching process without disturbing the eggs. Incubator structural is designed to disassemble and clean easy, the ventilation system has an upper cover that can be easily opened, and the lower tray can be cleaned with water, which can reuse and protect the incubator.
