Guerrilla gardening is the cultivation of neglected, unused, or public spaces outside conventional private gardens. It can mean planting flowers, growing food, or creating a shared green space where a site has been overlooked. Although the term is often associated with planting without permission, projects can also be open, organized, and community-led.

What does guerrilla gardening mean?

The phrase describes gardening beyond the boundaries of a conventional private garden, often on neglected or underused land. A project might improve an overlooked patch with flowers, grow food for local use, or turn a vacant lot into a place where neighbors can meet.

Permission is an important distinction, not a defining feature that makes every project the same. Some planting is informal or unauthorized; other efforts are visible and organized with community participation. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and the Guerrilla Gardeners of Washington, DC describe forms of the practice that include community aims.

Where did guerrilla gardening start?

There is no single documented origin for the broad practice of cultivating land outside conventional gardens. The RHS notes that people displaced from land and others have cultivated available ground for sustenance or autonomy. It connects the modern political movement to U.S. social activism in the 1960s and 1970s, and says the phrase “guerrilla gardening” originated with New York’s Green Guerillas.

Green Guerillas and New York’s vacant lots

Green Guerillas dates its work to 1973. Its organizational history names Liz Christy, Amos Taylor, and Martin Gallent as founders. Early actions included tossing “seed green-aids” over vacant-lot fences, planting sunflowers in street medians, and placing flower boxes on abandoned buildings.

The group later concentrated on a debris-filled lot at Bowery and Houston Streets, creating the Bowery Houston Farm and Garden. Its work helped encourage others to use community gardening to reclaim urban land and bring neighbors together.

An earlier, related example: Detroit’s vacant-lot gardens

Vacant-lot gardening predates the modern movement. In the 1890s, Detroit ran a municipal program known as “Pingree’s Potato Patches,” offering plots, seeds, tools, and multilingual instructions to unemployed workers. The Smithsonian Gardens account documents this as an antecedent in urban gardening—not evidence that the modern term or movement began in Detroit.

What are examples of guerrilla gardening?

Projects vary with the site, the people involved, and what the planting is meant to do. Examples include:

The Washington, DC group lists aims such as improving public space, adding urban greenery, growing food for neighborhood use, and beautifying neglected areas. These are stated goals, not a guarantee that every project achieves them.

What should people consider before starting a project?

A planting plan is only part of the work. Before deciding what to plant, clarify who controls the site, who will look after it, and how other people will use the space.

Why do people take part?

Motives can include making neglected places more welcoming, increasing greenery, growing food, and bringing neighbors together. Those purposes connect guerrilla gardening to both practical land use and community action, but a project’s actual results depend on its site, participants, and ongoing care.
