Fish meal fertilizer is a dry, ground-and-dried fish product used to add nutrients—especially nitrogen and phosphorus—to soil. Its nutrient content and recommended rate vary by product and source, so use the guaranteed analysis and directions on the package alongside a soil test and the needs of the crop.
What fish meal fertilizer is
Fish meal is made from fish material that has been ground and heat-dried. Colorado State University Extension describes it as ground, heat-dried fish waste; NC State Extension also notes that fish meal can include cannery waste and pomaces. It is sold as a dry fertilizer input, rather than as a liquid.
Fish meal can supply nitrogen and phosphorus, and some sources also identify sulfur. The actual nutrient analysis depends on the material and product; a general description is not a substitute for the guaranteed analysis on a particular bag.
How fish meal differs from fish emulsion and fish powder
| Product | Form and description | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fish meal | Dry, ground, heat-dried fish material. | Package analysis and dry-application directions. |
| Fish emulsion | Soluble liquid made from fish waste processed with heat and acid; Colorado State Extension lists a typical 5-2-2 analysis. | Liquid-product label, dilution instructions, and application method. |
| Fish powder | Heat-dried, water-soluble powder. | Whether the product is intended to dissolve in water and its label directions. |
These products are not interchangeable just because they come from fish. Their form affects handling and application, and their analyses may differ. Compare the actual package labels rather than assuming a typical value applies to every formulation.
#1 Best Overall
- Down To Earth Fish Bone Meal is a five pound box of all natural fertilizer with 4-12-0 formula and is listed by the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) for use in organic production
- Marine-based alternative to traditional steamed bone meal and is a great source of organic phosphorus and calcium and wonderful for all flowering plants, trees and shrubs
- As one of the three big nutrients for plants, phosphorous plays a role in both root and bloom development, which helps produce high-quality fruit and flowers
- Phosphorus helps plants take to new soil by boosting root development and strong root development means plants will grow faster and be healthier because they can absorb more water and nutrients from the soil
- The backbone of most of our fertilizer blends and contains a small amount of organic nitrogen and is an ideal fertilizer for new garden beds, perennials and bulbs
How much fish meal fertilizer to use
There is no single rate that applies to every garden or product. Published extension recommendations differ, and soil fertility and crop needs matter.
| Source and context | Published rate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Colorado State University Extension | 5–10 pounds per 100 square feet | Its organic-fertilizer guidance says to till in fish meal at this rate. The page’s publication date is not established. |
| Iowa State University Extension and Outreach | 3 pounds per 100 square feet for low-fertility soil; 2 pounds for medium-fertility soil; 1 pound for adequate-fertility soil | These are fertility-category recommendations to use with soil laboratory assessment, observations, and crop requirements. The page’s publication date is not established. |
Because these recommendations differ, do not average them or treat either as a universal prescription. Start with the directions for your specific product, then use soil-test results and crop requirements to determine whether and how much fertilizer is appropriate. Follow local extension guidance when available.

How to choose and apply a product
- Identify the formulation. Confirm that the package is fish meal, not fish emulsion or water-soluble fish powder.
- Read the guaranteed analysis. Check the nutrient percentages on the product label; published typical analyses are not guarantees for the bag you have.
- Consider the soil and crop. Use a soil laboratory test and the crop’s nutrient needs to guide whether an amendment is warranted.
- Apply according to the label. Use the stated rate and method for that formulation rather than transferring a rate from a different product or regional recommendation.
Why published nutrient figures vary
Colorado State University Extension lists 10-6-2 as a typical NPK analysis for fish meal and gives a release time of 1–4 months. University of Florida IFAS Extension’s table reports an average of 10–13% nitrogen, 4% phosphate (P2O5), and 0% potash (K2O); its table references sources dated 1997 and 2001. These figures describe different published references and should not be treated as directly interchangeable or as the guaranteed analysis of a commercial product.
Check the units as well as the numbers: the Florida figures express phosphorus as phosphate (P2O5) and potassium as potash (K2O). The product label is the relevant source for the contents of a specific package.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
Extension sources describe fish meal’s composition and offer application guidance, but their general information does not establish that every fish meal product will produce a particular result in every garden. Soil conditions, product analysis, application rate, and crop requirements all affect whether an amendment is appropriate.
