These symptoms can also have other causes, so check the load and the washer’s troubleshooting guidance before concluding that the machine is damaged.
Why an overloaded washer may clean less effectively
Clothes need room to move through the wash. When a drum is packed tightly, garments may not circulate freely, and there may not be enough room for water and detergent to move through the load as intended. Bosch UK explains that effective washing requires both enough water for detergent to dissolve and enough space for clothes to move.
The result can be poorer washing performance. A load that fits inside the drum is not necessarily a load that can wash well: the washer’s stated capacity and guidance for the selected cycle matter, as do the items’ size and absorbency.
What you may notice during the spin cycle
A tightly packed load can also be unevenly distributed. As the drum spins, that imbalance may cause noise or excessive shaking. Depending on the washer and the severity of the imbalance, the machine may reduce spin speed, extend the cycle, or interrupt spinning. Some models try to redistribute the load by turning gently or adding water; the exact response varies by machine.

If the spin is reduced or interrupted, clothes may come out wetter than expected. Wet laundry by itself does not prove that the load was overloaded or that a part has failed.

- An uneven load: items may bunch together or collect on one side of the drum.
- A washer that is not level: an installation or leveling issue can contribute to vibration.
- Bulky items: a large or absorbent item may need special handling or a suitable cycle.
- A spin setting that is too low or turned off: the selected setting can affect how much water remains in clothes.
- A drainage problem: trouble draining can leave laundry wet after the cycle.
Use the owner’s manual and the washer’s own troubleshooting instructions to distinguish among these possibilities.
What to do if the washer is shaking heavily
- Pause the washer safely. Follow the manual’s instructions. Do not force open a locked door or bypass a safety feature.
- Reduce the load. Remove some laundry if the drum is tightly packed.
- Redistribute what remains. Arrange items loosely and evenly rather than leaving them in a clump.
- Check bulky items. Read the item’s care label and consult the washer manual for the appropriate cycle and loading advice. Guidance can differ between models, including top-load and front-load machines.
- Restart only when the load is settled. If the washer continues to shake or spin poorly with a smaller, evenly distributed load, check that it is level and follow the manual’s troubleshooting steps. Persistent symptoms may require manufacturer support or qualified service.
How full should the drum be?
The owner’s manual is the most reliable source for your washer’s capacity and cycle-specific loading guidance. There is no single kilogram limit or drum-fill threshold established for every washer and every type of load.

As a general estimate, Bosch UK advises leaving a hand-width gap at the top of the drum—roughly three-quarters full. Treat that as Bosch’s guidance, not a universal rule: a bulky or highly absorbent load may need different handling, and guidance depends on the washer and the load.
When deciding whether a load is too large, consider whether the items can move freely, what the selected cycle permits, and whether the load contains bulky or absorbent pieces. If the washer’s guidance is unclear, consult its manual rather than relying on a fill estimate alone.

Can overloading damage the washer?
Repeated overloading can put extra pressure on parts such as drum bearings and door glass, according to Bosch UK. Bosch also warns that clothing can rub against the door seal. These are potential risks associated with continued overloading—not proof that one large load has damaged the machine.
If symptoms persist after correcting the load, investigate other causes using the manual or contact the manufacturer or a qualified service professional. Shaking or wet clothes alone do not establish that a component has failed.
