Yellow patch is a fungal disease of cool-season turf caused by Rhizoctonia cerealis. It is favored by extended cool, cloudy, wet weather, and excessive nitrogen, heavy thatch, and poor drainage can make conditions more favorable. Improve those conditions first; if the problem persists or the diagnosis is uncertain, seek local extension advice before considering a fungicide.

What causes yellow patch?

Yellow patch affects cool-season grasses, including bentgrasses, bluegrasses, and fescues. The fungus Rhizoctonia cerealis is most active at 50–65°F, according to NC State Extension, though infection can occur across a broader 45–75°F range. Extended periods of cool, cloudy, wet weather support disease development. Excess nitrogen, a thick thatch layer, and poorly drained soil can also encourage it.

These conditions and temperature ranges are described in NC State Extension’s guidance for North Carolina and the southern United States; use local extension recommendations for regional timing and treatment decisions. NC State Extension: Yellow Patch in Turf

What does yellow patch look like?

Symptoms commonly appear in fall, winter, or spring. Look for irregular yellow or white patches or rings, sometimes up to three feet across. Patches can merge into larger areas. Affected leaves may die back, or whole plants may be blighted; individual plants do not show distinct lesions. Turf can take time to recover because grass grows slowly in cool weather.

Yellowing alone does not confirm yellow patch. Other diseases can produce similar symptoms, so treat these signs as clues rather than a diagnosis.

How to improve conditions and help the lawn recover

  1. Moderate late-season nitrogen. NC State advises avoiding high nitrogen rates—above 0.25 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet—in late fall and early spring. Slow-release fertilizer can help avoid sudden flushes of leaf growth. Follow local turf guidance for your lawn and timing.
  2. Address drainage. Check for areas where water lingers, and improve surface and subsurface drainage where practical. Persistent wetness supports disease-favorable conditions.
  3. Reduce excessive thatch. Aerifying and topdressing can help manage thatch. Choose methods and timing suited to the grass and local growing conditions.
  4. Consider shade. Where shade is limiting recovery, more sunlight can help turf grow back.

These cultural measures target conditions that can favor the disease; they do not guarantee an immediate return to green. Recovery may remain slow when weather keeps grass growth sluggish.

When to consider fungicide

For persistent yellow patch, NC State describes preventive fungicide use as the best control approach. A curative application may help prevent further spread, but it cannot make slow-growing turf recover quickly. Product choice, timing, permitted uses, and application rates depend on the current label and local rules. Some products discussed in extension materials are not labeled for home lawns, so do not treat a product list as universal home-lawn advice.

  • Check current local extension guidance for your location.
  • Read and follow the product’s current label, including site, rate, timing, and safety directions.
  • Do not apply a pesticide unless the label and local regulations permit that use.

Could it be a different disease?

Microdochium patch, caused by Microdochium nivale, is a separate fungal disease that can also cause yellow blighting. Wisconsin Extension notes that it may produce diffuse yellow blighting on grass taller than six inches; other presentations can include reddish-brown, pink-edged, or bleached patches. Its cool, wet seasonal conditions overlap with those of yellow patch, so weather alone will not distinguish them.

Arber Organic Lawn Fungicide RTS - Brown Patch, Rust & Mildew, 16 oz
  • STOPS THE PATCHES SPREADING - Brown patch, dollar spot, summer patch and rust start small and move fast in warm, damp weather. Treat at the first discolored ring, not once the lawn thins out.
  • WHAT IT IS AND HOW TO USE IT - A 16 oz bottle of biological fungicide with the hose-end sprayer already fitted. Screw on the hose, set the dial to ARBER, spray until the grass is dripping. No mixing, no measuring.
  • ONE BOTTLE COVERS LAWN AND WOODY PLANTS - The same pass works on turf, ornamental trees, shrubs, roots and leaves, so you are not buying one product for the lawn and another for the border.
  • TREAT ON A REPEAT CYCLE - Repeat every two weeks or as needed through the disease season. Apply in calm weather with no rain forecast for 24 hours so it stays where you put it.
  • A BIOLOGICAL ACTIVE, NOT A SYNTHETIC - The active is a beneficial microbe that settles onto root and leaf surfaces, where disease would otherwise establish. Read the label; the sprayer refits any Arber bottle.
Clue Yellow patch Microdochium patch
Cause and affected turf Rhizoctonia cerealis; cool-season grasses including bentgrasses, bluegrasses, and fescues. Microdochium nivale; Wisconsin Extension describes yellow blighting on taller grass as one possible presentation.
Appearance Irregular yellow or white patches or rings; affected leaves or whole plants may be blighted. Can appear as diffuse yellow blighting on grass taller than six inches, or as reddish-brown, pink-edged, or bleached patches.
Season and conditions Often fall, winter, or spring during extended cool, cloudy, wet weather. Cool, wet seasonal conditions can overlap with yellow patch.

These visual differences are useful for triage, not definitive identification. Wisconsin Extension cautions that few plant diseases can be accurately diagnosed by eye. If symptoms do not fit clearly or keep returning, contact a local university extension service or plant diagnostic clinic. Its Microdochium guidance describes a fee-based clinic service; availability and procedures vary by location. University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension: Microdochium Patch

Do not use Kentucky bluegrass as a supposed yellow-patch-resistant replacement: NC State lists it among yellow patch hosts. Reseeding guidance for severely affected Microdochium patch is not a cure for active yellow patch.
