What Current Does a Kettle Draw? How to Calculate Amps from Watts

Estimate a kettle’s current draw with watts ÷ volts, then check its rating plate or manual for the appliance’s actual voltage and power rating.

A kettle’s estimated current draw is its rated power in watts divided by its supply voltage: amps ≈ watts ÷ volts. For example, a 2,500 W kettle on a 230 V supply draws about 10.9 A. The exact figure depends on the appliance’s rating and the voltage it is designed for, so check its rating plate or manual.

How to calculate a kettle’s current draw

  1. Find the rated power. Check the kettle’s label or manual for a figure in watts (W). If it is given in kilowatts (kW), multiply by 1,000; for example, 2.5 kW is 2,500 W.
  2. Find the supply voltage. Use the voltage stated for the kettle and the supply it is connected to.
  3. Divide watts by volts. The result is an approximate current in amps (A): I ≈ P ÷ V.

Pearson Qualifications uses a 2.5 kW kettle on 230 V as a worked example: 2,500 ÷ 230 gives approximately 10.86 A (Pearson worked example). This is a calculation from the stated power and voltage, not a universal rating for kettles.

Why the answer varies by kettle and region

Kettles have different power ratings, and household supply voltage varies by region. For the same power, a lower voltage means higher current: a technician handbook from the Electronics Sector Skills Council of India describes a 120 V supply as drawing about twice the current of a 230 V supply for the same power. That comparison is illustrative; use the actual appliance rating and local electrical guidance for a real installation (technician handbook).

For a specific example, Xiaomi lists its Electric Kettle 2 Lite at 1,500 W and 220–240 V. Dividing the rated power by the stated voltage range gives an estimated current of about 6.25–6.82 A. This range is arithmetic based on Xiaomi’s published specifications, not a separate manufacturer statement of operating current (Xiaomi Electric Kettle 2 Lite FAQ).

Where to find the kettle’s rating

Look for rated voltage and rated input power or current on the appliance’s rating label, or consult its manual. Hong Kong Trade Development Council technical guidance illustrates the information found on electrical product labels, including a kettle (HKTDC technical guidance). If you are comparing appliances, confirm that the voltage rating matches the intended supply; do not assume a model intended for one region is suitable everywhere.

Current draw is not the same as energy per boil

Current, measured in amps, describes the rate of electrical flow while the kettle is operating. Energy per boil is commonly expressed in kilowatt-hours (kWh) and depends on the amount of water heated as well as the heating process. Xiaomi reports about 0.2 kWh to boil a pot in its Electric Glass Kettle FAQ, while noting that boiling time depends on conditions such as starting water temperature and local voltage. That is a model-specific figure, not a universal estimate for every kettle (Xiaomi Electric Glass Kettle FAQ).

Haier’s buying guidance says the amount of water heated matters most for efficient kettle use, and describes 2,000–2,400 W as a usual range in its market context. The Electronics Sector Skills Council of India’s 2023 technician handbook describes 2–3 kW as typical in 200–240 V markets. These are examples of manufacturer and educational guidance, not a survey of all current products or a universal standard (Haier buying guide; technician handbook).

What the calculation can—and cannot—tell you about a socket

The watts-divided-by-volts estimate helps describe the kettle’s approximate current draw, but it does not establish whether a particular socket, circuit, or installation is safe. Xiaomi advises users of its Electric Kettle 2 Lite to avoid sharing a socket with other appliances because the model draws high current; that is manufacturer advice for that product, not a general electrical-code rule. Follow the kettle’s instructions and applicable local electrical requirements rather than treating any one amp figure as a universal household limit.
