After trash leaves the curb, it may be sorted for recycling, composted, burned to recover energy, treated, or buried in a landfill. The route depends on the material, the local collection program, available facilities, and local rules. This overview focuses on U.S. municipal solid waste (MSW)—everyday discards from households and similar sources—not every waste stream accepted at a landfill.
What happens to trash after collection?
Collection is the start of a series of possible routes, not a guarantee that every item will be recycled or handled in the same way. Local programs and processing capacity determine which materials are collected separately and where they go. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes a preferred order for managing materials: reduce and reuse first, then recycle and compost, recover energy, and finally treat or dispose. This is a broad hierarchy, not a rule that one route works for every material or community.
For construction readers, the distinction matters: this overview concerns MSW. Construction and demolition debris, industrial waste, wastewater sludge, and other waste streams may follow different rules and routes.
How recycling works—and why local rules matter
Recycling is a chain with three broad stages. Collected materials go to a processing facility, where they are sorted, contaminants removed, and materials prepared for a mill or manufacturer. Some glass and plastics receive additional preparation at specialized facilities. Manufacturers then use the recovered material to make new products. The details vary by material and locality; putting something in a recycling cart does not by itself mean it will become a new product. EPA: Recycling Basics

- PCR: Made of post-consumer recycled resin for commercial recycling use
- BUILT-IN HANDLES: Enable easier lifting and carrying
- DESIGNED TO EASILY STACK: Designed to stack or nest for increased productivity
- DURABLE: Commercial grade construction to withstand years of indoor and outdoor use
- EASY TO CLEAN: Texture and design prevent liquid and debris build up for easy cleaning
- Collection: A local government or private hauler collects materials accepted by the program.
- Sorting and preparation: A processing facility separates materials, removes contaminants, and prepares them for manufacturing.
- Remanufacturing: A mill or manufacturer uses recovered material in new products.
EPA defines recycling as recovering useful materials—including paper, glass, plastics, and metals—from the MSW stream and transforming them into new products. Composting is different: it is the aerobic decomposition of organic material under managed moisture and oxygen conditions. Food scraps and yard trimmings can be composted where a suitable collection and processing system exists. EPA: National Overview of Materials, Waste and Recycling
A recycling symbol or a general statement that a product is recyclable does not establish that a local curbside program accepts it. Check the current instructions from your city, county, or hauler for the specific item. Contamination can disrupt processing, and acceptance rules vary.
What happens to waste burned for energy?
In mass-burn combustion, collection trucks unload waste into a storage bunker. A crane feeds it into a combustion chamber; the heat boils water, producing steam that drives a turbine generator to make electricity. Combustion reduces the volume of waste destined for landfill, but it is energy recovery—not recycling or waste minimization. EPA: Energy Recovery from the Combustion of Municipal Solid Waste

Combustion leaves residue, including bottom ash and fly ash. EPA describes collecting and managing these materials, with residue transported in covered, leak-proof trucks to a landfill designed to protect groundwater. Scrap metal may be recovered from furnace ash, but that does not make the overall combustion route recycling.
How municipal landfills are designed and monitored
A municipal solid waste landfill is a defined area for household waste that may also accept certain other nonhazardous wastes. Modern MSW landfills use engineered features and safeguards, including a composite liner, a system to collect and remove leachate, and groundwater monitoring. Federal standards establish baseline criteria; states take the lead in ensuring compliance and may impose stricter requirements. EPA: Basic Information about Landfills
Decomposing waste can produce methane. Some landfills collect this gas and use it as fuel. That energy use is separate from recycling, which recovers material for use in new products. EPA: Sustainable Materials Management Hierarchy

- Space Saving Profile - The Highboy bin is perfect for tight or compact spaces; its narrow tall design and sleek shape make it ideal for the kitchen, garage, office, or other areas where space is limited while still large enough for household recycling.
- Easy Bag Removal - This indoor/outdoor recycle bin was designed with a tapered shape and vented sides to make it simple to remove a trash bag. Eliminate the struggle to remove a full bag of waste. The recommended bag size for ideal use is 33 gallons.
- Dustpan Edge - Sweep debris directly into the slim trash can with a dustpan edge that eliminates the need for a separate dustpan, making it easy and efficient to clean. The waste container is also made with smooth plastic to ensure easy cleaning.
- Easy to Carry - Designed with you in mind, the Highboy durable plastic recycling can has sturdy pass-through handles on top and a hand groove on the bottom. This makes moving the heavy-duty recycling container easier than ever.
- Multipack of 2 – The Highboy comes in a pack of 2, making it the perfect for kitchen, patio, garage, or office recycling bin. This is an excellent slim trash can for business or commercial use and pairs well with United Solutions’ Highboy Waste Container.
How the U.S. waste pathways compare
EPA’s national overview reports the following historical estimates for 2018. These are not current annual totals:
| Measure | U.S. estimate | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| MSW generated | 292.4 million U.S. short tons in 2018 | Total municipal solid waste generated. |
| MSW landfilled | More than 146 million tons in 2018 | Waste sent to landfills. |
| MSW combusted with energy recovery | Nearly 35 million tons in 2018 | Waste burned to recover energy. |

For an item-specific answer, identify its material, check the local program’s current acceptance rules, and find out whether a collection and processing route exists. The best option depends on what the material is, its condition and contamination level, and the facilities available nearby. No single route suits every material and circumstance.
- First, prevent or reduce waste where practical. Reuse can keep an item in service rather than sending it into a disposal stream.
- Check local recycling instructions. Follow the city, county, or hauler’s rules for the exact item; do not rely on a recycling symbol alone.
- Check for compost collection or drop-off. Organic materials can be composted where a suitable system accepts them.
- Understand the residual route. Energy recovery leaves ash that goes to a landfill; landfilling is disposal, even where landfill gas is captured for energy.
EPA sums up the hierarchy this way: “The hierarchy places emphasis on reducing, reusing, and recycling as key to sustainable materials management.” U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
