No—not if you need a contact cleaner. WD-40 says its standard Multi-Use Product leaves a protective lubricating layer and is not a contact cleaner. It can displace moisture on electrical contacts and printed circuit boards, but that is a different job. For cleaning metal electrical contacts, the company recommends its separate WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner.
Regular WD-40 and contact cleaner do different jobs
WD-40 UK states that Multi-Use Product “is not a contact cleaner” and leaves a protective lubricating layer on the surface. That layer may be useful where protection or moisture displacement is wanted, but it is not the same as cleaning contacts without leaving that layer. WD-40 UK’s FAQ makes this distinction directly.
| Product | Intended job | Layer after application |
|---|---|---|
| WD-40 Multi-Use Product | Can displace moisture from electrical contacts and PCBs; the manufacturer does not identify it as a contact cleaner. | Leaves a protective lubricating layer. |
| WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner | Manufacturer-recommended option for cleaning metal electrical contacts. | Designed for contact-cleaning applications; follow the product label and device maker’s instructions. |
The distinction matters in construction equipment, controls, switches, and other electrical gear: if the task is to clean a metal contact, use a product specified for that task rather than assuming the familiar Multi-Use Product is interchangeable with it.
When Specialist Contact Cleaner may be appropriate
WD-40 lists the Specialist cleaner for sensitive electronics and electrical equipment, with examples including motors, relays, panels, generators, circuit boards, controls, printers and copiers, switches, tape heads, and precision instruments. Its technical data sheet advises testing on a sample and consulting the manufacturer for precision instruments.

Those examples are not blanket compatibility approval for every device or material. Before applying any cleaner, check the equipment maker’s instructions, especially where connectors, coatings, plastics, rubber, or precision parts are involved.

- Check the equipment instructions. Confirm that the device maker permits contact cleaner for the part you intend to clean.
- Isolate power. Disconnect or otherwise isolate the equipment before application, following its service procedure.
- Let hot surfaces cool. Do not apply the aerosol to hot equipment.
- Use only where vapour can evaporate. WD-40 advises against spraying into cavities, openings, gaps, or areas without sufficient airflow for evaporation.
- Wait for complete drying. Do not restore power until the product is fully dry and the equipment maker’s instructions permit it.
For its US Specialist Contact Cleaner, the safety data sheet prepared December 18, 2024 identifies the product as a flammable aerosol and lists additional health hazards. Read the current label and safety data sheet for the product sold in your market; hazard classifications and instructions should not be assumed to be identical across regional versions. WD-40’s US safety data sheet provides the US product’s specific hazard information.
