Conduit is a type of raceway. Raceway is the broader term for a channel designed to hold electrical wires, cables or busbars; conduit describes one family of raceways, generally tubular. So “raceway vs. conduit” is not a comparison between two mutually exclusive products. The practical choice is between particular raceway forms—such as conduit, surface raceway or wireway—matched to the installation and applicable code.
What do “raceway” and “conduit” mean?
OSHA defines a raceway as “a channel designed expressly for holding wires, cables, or busbars, with additional functions as permitted in this subpart.” That is a construction-standard definition; it does not replace the electrical code adopted for a specific project. OSHA’s 29 CFR 1926.449 definitions provide the formal reference.
Conduit is one kind of raceway. OSHA’s examples include rigid metal conduit, rigid nonmetallic conduit, intermediate metal conduit, liquidtight flexible metal conduit, flexible metallic tubing, flexible metal conduit and electrical metallic tubing (EMT). The broader raceway category also includes underfloor and surface raceways, wireways and busways. Trade coverage likewise explains the distinction between the terms. EC&M’s discussion of conduit definitions is another terminology reference.
How do the common forms differ?
| Form | What it describes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Conduit | A tubular raceway; available in different materials and constructions, including rigid, flexible, metal and nonmetallic types. | Specific type, product listing, compatible fittings, installation environment and locally adopted code. |
| Surface raceway | A raceway form identified separately from conduit in OSHA’s definition. | Whether the listed product and its instructions permit the intended location and use. |
| Wireway | A raceway form included in OSHA’s definition, distinct from conduit. | Product construction, permitted use, fittings and applicable code requirements. |
| Busway | A raceway form included in OSHA’s definition for holding busbars. | System design, product listing, installation conditions and applicable code requirements. |
These are categories, not interchangeable product recommendations. “Conduit” itself is not a single specification: material, rigidity and construction vary, and the permitted application depends on the product and installation conditions.

What does a raceway system do?
Raceways contain conductors and provide mechanical protection. NEMA’s Electrical Standards & Products Guide, 2022 edition says raceway systems “are relied upon to provide mechanical protection for circuit conductors and to carry potentially dangerous fault currents.” That describes system functions; it does not mean every raceway product is suitable for every environment or installation. Grounding and bonding requirements must be evaluated under the applicable code and system design.
How should you compare options for a project?
Compare specific products and applications, rather than treating the broad term “raceway” as a rival to conduit. Confirm the following before choosing or specifying a system:

- Liquid Tight Conduit Kit: Our liquid-tight conduits are made of antioxidant PVC material, featuring a smooth interior for easier wire pulling. Length: 25 feet, Comes with 4 straight and 3 90-degree conduit connectors
- Safety and Reliability: Our electrical conduits resist corrosion, wear, oil, water, acid, and metal chips, making them ideal for harsh environments. They offer excellent tensile and compressive strength and are suitable for outdoor, UV-resistant, and direct burial applications
- Easy Installation: No disassembly required, simplifying wire installation. Just push the conduit onto the ferrule and tighten the dome sealing nut. Easily cut to the desired length with a utility knife or PVC cutter
- Flexible and Light: Our non metalic liquid tight conduits are suitable for tight spaces, lightweight, 50% lighter than metal conduits, more flexible and lightweight, and lower installation costs
- Wide Application: Liquid-tight electrical conduits are suitable for AC equipment, machine tools, marine equipment, motors and controls, printing equipment, pumps, refrigeration systems, transformer connections, and outdoor lighting
- Form: Decide whether the installation calls for tubular conduit, surface raceway, wireway or another raceway form.
- Material and construction: Check whether the product is metal or insulating, and rigid or flexible, as relevant to the project.
- Location and exposure: Verify that the product’s listing and manufacturer instructions cover the intended location and conditions, including exposure to physical damage.
- Protection and electrical role: Determine the required conductor protection and check grounding and bonding requirements against the adopted code and system design.
- Fittings and access: Confirm that fittings are compatible and provide the access needed for conductor pulling, maintenance or other permitted work.
- Local requirements: Check the code edition adopted by the jurisdiction and consult the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) when requirements or suitability are uncertain.
Raceway products and standards are not interchangeable simply because they serve a similar broad function. For example, NEMA’s 2022 guide identifies ANSI C80.1-2020 for electric rigid steel conduit and ANSI C80.3-2020 for electrical metallic tubing—steel. It describes EMT as typically supplied in nominal 10-foot (3.05-metre) lengths and protected with zinc or alternate corrosion protection on its surfaces, with an interior zinc or organic coating. These are details in that guide, not a substitute for checking the current standard, product markings, manufacturer instructions and project requirements.

Fittings are parts of a raceway installation, not alternative names for raceway or conduit. For example, Eaton describes conduit outlet bodies—called Condulet™ in its product line—as fittings used with rigid or intermediate conduit. They can connect conduit sections, bends and branch runs and provide access for pulling conductors, splices and taps. Eaton’s conduit body information describes that product family; it should not be read as permission to use every body for every splice or application.
