Unlike a timed cycle, its run time can change with the load. If a cycle ends while clothes are still damp, residue on the sensor bars, a very small load, or a mix of light and heavy fabrics may be involved.
What is Sensor Dry on a Samsung dryer?
Sensor Dry is an automatic cycle: the dryer detects dryness and ends the cycle when the selected dryness level is reached. Samsung says Sensor Dry cycles use a sensor inside the dryer and may shorten or extend the cycle as needed. Its FAQ describes built-in moisture sensors and says the system automatically adjusts drying time and temperature. These are Samsung’s general product descriptions; they do not establish that every model uses an identical sensor design or control algorithm.
Samsung’s US guidance is general, not a substitute for your model’s manual. Cycle names, available settings and controls vary by model and selected cycle.
Sensor Dry vs. Manual Dry
| Cycle type | How it ends | When it can help |
|---|---|---|
| Sensor Dry | Stops when the sensor detects the selected dryness level. | For loads whose drying time may vary. |
| Manual Dry / Time Dry | Stops when the selected time expires, whether or not the laundry is dry. | When you want a fixed runtime; check the result and follow garment care labels. |
For exact cycle names and options on your dryer, check Samsung’s guide to cycles, settings, and features and the manual for your model.

How Dry Level and mixed-load alerts affect the cycle
Choose the target dryness
Dry Level sets how dry the load should be before a Sensor Dry cycle ends. Samsung says a larger or bulkier load may need a higher setting. A lower setting may suit lightweight items or laundry that will finish drying on a line or flat surface. Depending on the model and cycle, similar choices may appear as settings or named options such as Very Dry, More Dry or Damp Dry.
Separate light and heavy items when possible
Lighter fabrics can dry before heavier ones and may touch the sensor bars first. Samsung says this can end Sensor Dry while heavier pieces remain damp. On supported models, Damp Alert—called Mixed Load Bell on some older models—signals at about 80 percent dry. It is a prompt to pause the dryer and remove items that are already dry; the alert does not stop the cycle. Availability and behavior are model-dependent. See Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance for clothes that are not dry.

Why does my Samsung dryer stop before clothes are dry?
Start with the sensor bars and the load. Samsung identifies the moisture sensors as two curved metal bars inside the front of the drum, usually in or beside the lint-filter housing. Dryer-sheet residue can coat the bars and interfere with detection, so the dryer may behave as if the load is dry.
Clean the moisture sensor bars
- Locate the two curved metal bars inside the front of the drum, near the lint-filter housing.
- Wipe them with a soft cloth and a drop of dish soap or mild soap.
- Wipe them dry with a towel or another cloth.
Samsung gives this cleaning method in its dryer cleaning instructions. The bars are not the lint filter: keep the filter in place whenever the dryer runs.

Check whether the load is too small
A very small load may not brush against the sensor bars enough for reliable detection. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance gives an approximate minimum of four regular-sized bath towels and suggests adding a few soaked towels to extremely small loads. This is a general manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for every model or load; consult your manual for model-specific instructions.
Adjust the dryness level or handle a mixed load
If the load consistently finishes less dry than you want, raise Dry Level if the selected cycle and model allow it. For mixed weights, use Damp Alert or Mixed Load Bell if available, then remove items that are already dry so heavier pieces can continue.

Why is Sensor Dry taking too long?
A long cycle does not by itself show that the moisture sensor is faulty. Samsung points to moisture failing to leave the dryer as a common cause. Clean the lint filter before or after every load, never operate the dryer without it, and replace it if damaged. Restricted exhaust airflow can also lengthen drying; Samsung recommends professional service for exhaust-vent cleaning. Its cleaning guide also mentions optional DIY tools, but a vent-cleaning kit is not needed to clean the moisture bars.
Eco Dry can lengthen a cycle on models that offer it because it reduces heat output and may start without hot air. Check your model’s manual for how that setting works and which cycles support it.
Where to find the right instructions for your model
Use the model number on the dryer to find its official Samsung manual. Confirm the cycle and setting names there before changing controls: not every Samsung dryer has the same Dry Level choices, Damp Alert, Eco Dry or named cycles. Samsung’s cleaning guide and damp-clothes troubleshooting page provide general US advice, while the manual is the source for model-specific operation.
