A blue wire has no single universal purpose. In some wiring systems it identifies a neutral conductor; in others it may serve a different function. The right interpretation depends on the jurisdiction and code edition, when the wiring was installed, the circuit type, and the equipment documentation. Never identify a conductor by color alone.
What is the blue wire?
For color-identified conductors, IEC 60445:2017 uses blue for a neutral or mid-point conductor when the circuit includes one. Where a wiring system has no neutral or mid-point conductor, blue may identify another conductor, but not a protective conductor. The standard also cautions against using blue for another conductor where confusion is possible. This is a convention, not proof of what a particular wire does. Why the same color can mean different things
Jurisdiction and code edition
Color conventions vary by location and can change over time. Hong Kong’s Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) documents a fixed-installation transition: the old scheme used blue for phase and black for neutral, while the new scheme uses blue for neutral and black for phase. EMSD required the new colors for new fixed electrical installations from 1 July 2009 and warns that mixing old and new colors may cause electrical accidents. Circuit and application
A fixed AC installation, a vehicle or other DC system, and a device-specific control harness may each use a different identification scheme. For example, a Caltrans equipment specification labels blue as “Hot” in its AC wire-color table and also lists a blue 18-gauge speed-input wire in a separate vehicle/DC table. Equipment documentation
For a device or vehicle harness, follow the exact product’s wiring diagram, pinout, terminal labels, and markings. Sony, for example, identifies blue and blue/white wires on its specified 16-pin harness as antenna or amplifier control wires. How to assess an unknown blue wire
- Identify where the wire is installed. Establish whether it belongs to fixed building wiring, a vehicle/DC system, or a particular appliance or harness.
- Establish the relevant rules and installation context. Determine the jurisdiction and applicable code edition; where possible, account for the installation date and whether old and new color schemes may coexist.
- Consult the authoritative diagram for that circuit. Use the applicable local wiring rules and the equipment maker’s documentation, checking wire labels, terminal markings, and connector pinout rather than relying on insulation color.
- Do not guess or improvise a test on a hazardous circuit. The cited guidance does not establish a universal test procedure or specify a meter rating or method. If the conductor’s identity remains uncertain, use qualified electrical assistance and follow local safety rules. A meter does not make color alone reliable or make hazardous work safe.
Safety considerations
A color-code reference cannot establish that a conductor is de-energized or safe to handle. The sources cited here demonstrate that blue can have different functions, but they do not provide a general safe-work procedure for household or industrial mains wiring. Do not treat Sony’s instruction for its described harness as a complete procedure for other electrical work. For that harness, Sony specifically advises disconnecting the vehicle battery before wiring work; for other systems, follow the applicable product instructions and local rules.
