Consumer Reports’ 2026 comparison found that its best-performing dishwasher detergent packs cleaned better than most tested gels—but that is a category-level finding, not a universal winner. Performance varies by product and machine, and powder was not included in its current US ratings. Compare cleaning evidence and cost per load, then choose a format that fits your dosing preferences and follow your dishwasher’s instructions.
Which dishwasher detergent works best?
Consumer Reports says its best-performing detergent packs outperform most gels in its tests. Its comparison covers nearly 30 detergents and reports wide variation in cleaning performance and price. Some store brands can perform well, so a familiar national brand or a higher shelf price does not guarantee better results. These are Consumer Reports laboratory findings, not a ranking for every dishwasher or household.
The accessible comparison does not establish an overall winner or provide enough item-level results to name a specific best product. Treat the pack-versus-gel result as a starting point, then compare current product evidence and the cost of the dose you actually use.
Are dishwasher pods better than gel?
For cleaning performance, Consumer Reports’ results favor its best-performing packs over most tested gels. For convenience, packs offer a premeasured dose. Gels let you measure the amount yourself and may suit shoppers who prioritize cost per load or liquid dosing; some gels perform well, even though they generally do not match the top packs in those tests.

That does not mean every pack beats every gel. Consumer Reports notes that packs may combine additives such as enzymes, degreasers, bleach, and rinse aid, but says performance is too complicated to attribute to one ingredient. Its engineer Larry Ciufo puts one ingredient in context: “Generally, enzymes do help,” while the broader results cannot be pinned on a single ingredient.
How powder fits the comparison
Powder is another established format and allows measured dosing, but Consumer Reports no longer tests it in its current US ratings because availability declined. It therefore has no directly comparable standing in the cited pack-and-gel results.

Compare cost per load, not package price
Consumer Reports’ May 8, 2026 comparison excerpt reported prices ranging from 7 to 57 cents per load across the products it covered. That is a dated reported range—not a live checkout quote or a price that applies to every detergent. Package sizes, labeled doses, and retailer prices differ, so compare the price of a package with the number of labeled loads it provides.
A lower package price can be misleading if the package contains fewer doses. Conversely, a higher-priced pack may be worthwhile if premeasured dosing matters to you or if current product-level evidence supports its cleaning performance.

How to choose a detergent for your household
Start with the cleaning evidence
Use comparative test results to narrow your options, not as a guarantee for your machine. The available Consumer Reports findings support a general advantage for top packs over most gels, but they do not identify a current overall winner in the accessible results.
Match the format to your dosing preference
- Choose packs if you value a premeasured dose and want to start with the format whose top performers led in Consumer Reports’ comparison.
- Choose gel if you prefer measured liquid dosing or want to compare its cost per load; some gels perform well.
- Consider powder if you prefer granular dosing, while recognizing that it was not included in the current Consumer Reports US ratings cited here.
Use detergent made for automatic dishwashers
Check both the detergent label and your machine’s manual for directions. Use a product intended for an automatic dishwasher; liquid hand dish detergent is not a substitute. Dosing and loading instructions can be machine-specific, so do not assume one model’s directions apply to another.

What an EPA Safer Choice label means
EPA’s Safer Choice program evaluates ingredients against its criteria, requires ingredient disclosure for labeled products, and requires labeled products to meet performance standards. The label describes review under the program; it is not an absolute promise that a product is harmless or safest for every person.
EPA says it does not allow the Safer Choice label on liquid detergent packets in soluble film because of potential hazards to young children and others. That is the program’s labeling policy, not proof that every packet causes harm.
