A red light on a Samsung dryer does not have one universal meaning. Samsung’s support guidance describes several kinds of indicator: cycle-status lights, maintenance reminders, feature icons, and blinking-light error patterns on certain models. The color alone does not tell you what the dryer is reporting. What identifies the problem is the dryer model, the exact symbol or blink pattern, whether the light is steady or blinking, and whether anything else about the dryer is behaving differently.
Identify the light before you act on it
Start by recording four things. Each one changes which Samsung guide applies.
- Model number. Find it on the appliance label and write it down. Samsung directs owners to the manual for their exact model, because icon availability and blink patterns differ between models.
- The symbol or pattern. Note whether the light sits beside a picture or label, or whether it is part of a sequence of lights.
- Steady or blinking. A steady light and a blinking light can point to different categories, and the number of blinks or the lights that blink together can matter on blink-code models.
- Other symptoms. Does the dryer run, stop, heat normally, or take longer than usual? Is the door closing properly?
Samsung US and Samsung Canada publish separate guides. The Samsung Canada page states that its information applies to dryers sold in Canada, and that icon availability varies by model. Use the guide for your region and model, not a general chart.
What a red indicator can represent

This grouping is a way to organize Samsung’s categories, not a Samsung classification. Your model’s manual decides which category applies to your light.

Filter and vent reminders
Samsung’s US icon guide says the filter reminder appears after each load as a prompt to clean the lint filter. The same guide describes a vent alert: the indicator lights when the exhaust vent is about 60% clogged and blinks when it is about 80% clogged. These are thresholds Samsung sets for the models covered by that guide. They are not measurements taken from your dryer, and they should not be applied to other brands or to Samsung models outside that guide.
Samsung Canada’s icon guidance, last updated September 11, 2026, similarly separates the filter reminder from the vent-check indicator. Check the vent when the vent indicator is on, and clean the lint filter after the reminder appears.

Samsung US Support: An icon is showing on my Samsung dryer covers the full icon set, including Sensor Dry, Child Lock, Delay Start, remaining time, Steam, Smart Care, Smart Control, Wi-Fi, and cycle progress. For many of these, the icon confirms a setting or stage rather than a problem.
US blink-code patterns
Some Samsung dryers use blinking lights instead of a digital error code. Samsung’s US guide on blinking lights lists the combinations below. These mappings come from that guide and apply to the models it covers. A digital error code is a different category; Samsung’s separate guide on error codes covers those.

Samsung links the heating error to airflow. A clogged lint screen or vent can trap heat, so cleaning both is the first step for that pattern. If the alert stays on after cleaning, the guide directs you to service rather than further home diagnosis.

The light blinks, and the dryer works normally
Samsung’s blinking-light guide states: “If the only issue you have with your dryer is that lights are blinking, then your dryer is operating normally, and no action is needed.” The page is published by Samsung US Support and does not name an individual author. The statement applies when no other symptoms are present and the pattern is not one of the errors listed in the guide.

The light matches a heating or vent pattern
- Unplug the dryer or switch off its power before handling the lint screen and vent.
- Remove and clean the lint screen.
- Clean the exhaust vent system, including the duct behind the dryer, as far as you can reach safely.
- Run the dryer again. If the heating pattern returns, request Samsung service.
The light matches a door pattern
- Open the door and check for clothing caught between the door and the drum.
- Close the door firmly and confirm the latch engages.
- If the door or latch is damaged, or the error cannot be cleared, seek service.
The light matches a jammed-button or communication pattern
For a jammed-button pattern, power the dryer off and press and release each panel button separately. For a communication pattern, turn the dryer off for 60 seconds and restart it. If either pattern returns, or a button is damaged, request service.
The light matches a voltage pattern
Plug the dryer into its own dedicated circuit and remove any extension cord. On an electric dryer, check that the power cord is installed correctly and that the supply voltage is correct. Do not open the appliance or replace a part based on the light alone. If the error persists, seek service.

Limits of this guidance
Samsung’s pages describe categories and patterns. They do not publish a figure for how often a red light signals a fault, so no such rate should be assumed. Without the model number and the exact symbol or blink pattern, the meaning of your specific light cannot be confirmed. The Samsung US and Canadian guides also differ by market, and the blink-code mappings apply only to the models that use them.
For service, Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance points to Samsung support when an error persists, controls are damaged, or door hardware is damaged. Use the Samsung support page for your country to start that request.
