It can offer corrosion or heat resistance, formability, strength, or a suitable appearance—but no single grade delivers every property, and stainless steel is not immune to corrosion.
What stainless steel strip is
Stainless steel strip is a narrow, flat-rolled product supplied commonly in coils, and also available as cut lengths or on spools. The boundary between strip, sheet and foil depends on the standard or industry using the terms. For example, a USITC report reproduces definitions describing strip as less than 24 inches (600 mm) wide and less than 0.1875 inch (5.00 mm) thick; it also notes that certain cold-finished material no thicker than 0.13 mm and under 610 mm wide may be called either strip or foil. How processing shapes the product
Production generally involves melting and refining, casting slabs, hot rolling and, when required, cold rolling, according to the USITC. Cold rolling can reduce thickness and improve dimensional tolerances and surface quality. The report describes most stainless sheet and strip as cold rolled, but that is an observation in an older industry report, not a current market statistic.
Suppliers may offer different surface finishes and material conditions, including bright-annealed and work-hardened precision strip. The available combinations of grade, finish and dimensions are product-specific. Coil inside diameter and spool supply may also be options; Outokumpu references EN 10258 for tolerances and says closer tolerances can be agreed. Which stainless steel grade family fits the job?
ASTM groups stainless steels into five broad families: austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, duplex and precipitation-hardening. These categories help orient a selection, but the exact grade, product standard and material condition determine performance. ASTM: What Is Stainless Steel?
- Austenitic, ferritic, martensitic and duplex: These are broad alloy families, not guarantees of a particular corrosion resistance, strength, formability or magnetic behavior. Compare the exact grade and specification against the service requirements.
- Precipitation-hardening: ASTM A693-24 covers precipitation-hardening stainless and heat-resisting steel plate, sheet and strip. Mechanical properties develop through low-temperature heat treatment. Strength, forming capability and temperature limits depend on the alloy and condition, so those characteristics should not be applied to stainless strip generally. ASTM A693-24
ASTM A480/A480M-24a sets general requirements for relevant flat-rolled stainless and heat-resisting steel products, including chemical and mechanical testing provisions. Product-specific requirements take precedence when they conflict with the general requirements; a purchase order may also set more stringent requirements within the standard’s stated limits. Do not assume matching or similar grade names mean equivalent material across ASTM, EN, JIS or other systems. Where stainless steel strip is used
Strip can serve as finished material for components or as feedstock for further manufacturing. The USITC lists automotive trim, exhaust and emissions-control systems, wheel covers, and slit coil used to produce pipe and tube among its examples. Those applications illustrate the range of needs—such as corrosion resistance, heat resistance or design characteristics—that can motivate stainless selection. USITC report

- Define the service conditions. Identify the corrosion environment, operating temperature and required strength, hardness or forming performance. Consider magnetic behavior only if it matters to the application.
- Name the grade and governing standard. Specify the designation system and applicable product standard. ASTM A480/A480M provides general requirements; the relevant product specification and purchase requirements also need to be clear.
- Set dimensions and delivery form. State thickness, width and tolerances, and whether the requirement is for slit coil, cut lengths or spool supply.
- Specify condition and finish. Say whether annealed or work-hardened material is required, along with surface finish and any cleanliness or appearance requirements.
- State documentation and quantity needs. Identify required tests, material certification, traceability and order quantity.
- Compare like with like. Ask suppliers to confirm the exact specification, condition, dimensions, finish and certificates. Check equivalence against the actual standards rather than relying on grade-name similarity.
