Choose a blade that fits the slot closely in both width and thickness; if it rocks or overhangs, use a better-fitting driver. “Slotted” precisely describes the screw drive, while “flat-head” can refer either to the driver or to a screw-head shape.
What does a slotted screwdriver look like?
The basic tool has three parts: a handle, a straight shaft, and a flat blade at the tip. The blade is slightly wedge-shaped so it can engage the two sides of a straight slot. Grip textures, color or size markings, magnetic tips, and shaft length vary by product; they are features, not requirements of the design. TEKTON’s description of its slotted drivers illustrates the wedge-shaped tip.
Is a slotted screwdriver the same as a flat-head screwdriver?
In everyday usage, “flat-head screwdriver” often means a slotted driver. The terms are not always precise: “slotted” identifies the straight recess in the screw, while “flat-head” can also describe the shape of a screw head. To avoid confusion, call the fastener a slotted screw and the tool a slotted or flat-blade driver. Hultafors’ overview of screwdriver types discusses this distinction.
What sizes and variations are available?
Slotted drivers range from very small precision tools to larger general-purpose and heavy-duty models. A manufacturer’s size examples can help narrow a choice, but they are not a universal guide to every screw.

| Variation | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Precision | Small tips and handles for small fasteners or fine adjustment. Wiha identifies 3.5 mm as a common size in its range for precision and controls work. |
| General-purpose | Wiha identifies 5.5 mm as a common size in its range for general-purpose work. |
| Larger slotted drivers | Wiha identifies 6.5 mm as a common size in its range for larger screws. |
| Standard and long-shaft | Different shaft lengths suit different reach and access needs; lengths vary by model. |
| Stubby | A short tool for confined access. FACOM, for example, lists a 4 × 30 mm stubby slotted driver. |
| Parallel and flared profiles | Blade-profile options listed in some product ranges, including FACOM’s; these labels are not a universal naming system. |
| Insulated | A specialized driver for electrical work when properly rated insulation is required. A soft-grip or rubberized handle alone does not establish electrical insulation. |
| Driver bit | A slotted tip supplied as a bit for a compatible holder or powered tool, rather than as a complete hand screwdriver. |
The size examples above are from Wiha’s slotted screwdriver and bit size guide; its metric-to-inch equivalents may not exactly match common North American sizes. FACOM’s range includes profile and stubby examples in its slotted screwdriver set listing.
What is a slotted screwdriver used for?
It turns slotted screws: fasteners with a single straight recess across the head. The right driver depends on the screw and the working space. General fastening, precision tasks, and controls work are examples reflected in Wiha’s sizing guidance; shaft length, handle size, and tip dimensions determine whether a particular driver is suitable.

- Dual material handle provides a more comfortable grip and higher performance
- Non-slip black oxide tip for secure fit in clasp
- Ergonomic three-lobe dual material handle ensures the optimal balance of strength and efficiency
- Polished alloy steel screwdriver shaft prevents rust and corrosion
- Good handle design for faster rotation in low torque applications
How do you choose the right size?
- Check the screw slot. Identify its width and depth, and compare them with the driver blade.
- Choose a close fit. The blade should engage the sides of the slot without rocking loosely or overhanging. Match both width and thickness.
- Use manufacturer sizing as a starting point. Metric and inch sizes can differ across product lines, so check the actual screw rather than relying on an assumed conversion. Wiha’s guide provides examples, not a universal screw-to-driver chart.
- Consider access and task needs. Choose an appropriate shaft length, handle, or stubby form; use a precision driver for small fasteners and a properly rated insulated tool when the electrical task requires one.
TEKTON’s six-piece set is one example of a multi-size range, not a guarantee that any particular set will fit every screw.

What safety limits should you know?
- Stop if the blade will not seat securely. A poor fit can slip out of the slot.
- Do not use the screwdriver as a chisel or pry bar. Use a tool designed for those loads.
- Keep the tool in good repair. OSHA advises replacing screwdrivers with damaged handles; it also notes that highly repetitive screwdriver work may irritate elbow tendons. See OSHA’s guidance on using tools.
- Treat electrical work separately. OSHA’s general-industry rule states: “When working near exposed energized conductors or circuit parts, each employee shall use insulated tools or handling equipment if the tools or handling equipment might make contact with such conductors or parts.” OSHA also says exposed live parts employees may encounter should generally be deenergized before work unless an exception applies. Select properly rated equipment and follow applicable electrical safety requirements; ordinary grip material does not make a screwdriver voltage-rated. See OSHA standard 1910.335.
