A double block and bleed (DBB) arrangement uses two sealing elements to separate pressure sources, with a bleed connection between them. The blocks provide the barriers; the bleed lets the intermediate space be vented or drained and can reveal leakage past a block. That space may be a valve’s internal body cavity or a section of pipe between two separate valves.
What the blocks and bleed do
The two blocks are the sealing elements that interrupt flow from either side. The bleed is a connection to the volume between those elements. Opening it allows that volume to be relieved or drained; if a block leaks, fluid may enter the intermediate space and become detectable at the bleed.
A DBB designation describes an arrangement, not a guarantee of identical performance in every application. Seat direction, pressure behavior and operating sequence depend on the particular valve design. API guidance says users must match operational requirements to the valve’s sealing capability and function, and advises consulting the manufacturer: API Annex E.
Where the bleed goes
Two separate block valves
In a piping arrangement, two valves are installed in series. The bleed connection accesses the pipe segment between them. That intermediate segment can be vented or drained while the block valves are closed.

One valve with two seats
In a single-valve arrangement, both seating elements are inside the valve, and the bleed accesses the body cavity between the seats. API material recognizes both the single-valve and two-valve forms as DBB arrangements: API Annex E and the reproduced API 6D definition.
DBB and DIB are not interchangeable terms
The distinction concerns how the two sealing elements relate to pressure sources. API Annex E describes DBB as segregating two pressure sources, with a bleed between the sealing elements. DIB describes two sealing elements against a single pressure source, also with a bleed between them. Other documents, including regulations, may define the terms differently, so confirm the governing standard and project terminology.

The reproduced 2008 API 6D definition describes a DBB valve as having two seating surfaces that seal against pressure from both ends and a means to bleed the cavity between the seats. It expressly cautions that this does not provide positive double isolation when pressure is applied from only one side. By contrast, the cited DIB definition describes two seats that each seal against pressure from a single source; this feature may be provided in one direction or both directions. The valve’s actual design documentation matters more than its label.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a cited seat-tightness test checks
The API material describes a DBB seat-tightness test in which the valve and cavity are filled with test fluid, the valve is closed, and the body vent is opened so excess fluid can overflow through the cavity test connection. Test pressure is then applied simultaneously at both ends of the valve, and seat tightness is monitored through overflow at the cavity connection. This is a description of the cited test procedure, not a field-isolation method or a substitute for the applicable current standard and manufacturer instructions: API 6D Product Specification Level Requirements.

What to confirm before selecting or relying on a DBB arrangement
- Confirm whether the requirement is DBB or DIB, and identify the pressure-source configuration that must be isolated.
- Establish whether the arrangement uses two separate valves with a piping bleed or one valve with a body-cavity bleed.
- Check the seat sealing direction and required operating sequence against the exact valve design.
- Confirm pressure, fluid, temperature, materials, end connections and project requirements with the manufacturer and responsible engineering authority.
- Check the applicable current standard, regulations and project documents. The cited definitions are reproduced API material, and terminology or requirements can vary by edition and jurisdiction.
