U6 on a Samsung washer is an unbalanced-load code. Samsung’s US support guide groups it with the other unbalanced-load errors, which means the laundry is unevenly distributed inside the drum and the washer may not finish the cycle. The first step is to untangle and spread out the load, close the door, and restart. If the code returns, the next step depends on your exact model, because Samsung notes that code meanings can vary between models.
What U6 means
U6 is an information code in Samsung’s US list of washer error codes, grouped under “Unbalanced Load Error.” It describes the load inside the tub. It does not identify a failed part, and Samsung’s US guide does not link U6 to a specific component. A washer displays an unbalanced-load code when its sensors detect that the clothes are bunched on one side of the drum, which can stop the spin or cause the cycle to halt.

Because the code describes the load rather than a fault, the practical response starts with the laundry and the washer’s position, not with parts.
How to clear U6 and restart the cycle
Work through these steps in order. Most unbalanced-load messages are resolved at the first or second step.

- Exclusive Installation Bundle: Includes 3-Prong and 4-Prong Dryer Power Cords, Washer Hose Set, 8-ft Vent Duct, and 1-Year CPS Protection Plan
- Smart Wi-Fi Enabled: Control washer and dryer remotely via SmartThings app
- 4.7 cu ft capacity Washer with Active WaterJet & vibration reduction tech
- Built-in WaterJet faucet lets you pretreat stains inside the tub
- Self Clean keeps the tub fresh without harsh chemicals
- Pause or stop the cycle. Use the control panel to pause or stop the washer as your model allows. Open the door only when the washer permits it. Do not force the door while the drum is still moving.
- Untangle the laundry. Pull out bedding, towels, or jeans that have wrapped around each other or the agitator or drum wall. Lay items flat and distribute them around the drum so the weight is spread evenly rather than concentrated in one spot.
- Move heavy items to the center. A single heavy item such as a bath mat, comforter, or wet blanket can cause the imbalance by itself. Add a few lighter items to balance it if the load is otherwise small.
- Close the door and press Start. Samsung’s US guide advises closing the door and restarting the cycle with the Start button.
- Check the code again. If the cycle completes, no further action is needed. If U6 returns, move to the checks below.
Check the washer’s position and surface
If U6 appears on a load that looks properly distributed, the washer’s stability is the next thing to check. Samsung’s guidance for this code group asks you to confirm that the machine stands on a flat, stable surface and is level.
- Surface: Use a solid, flat floor. Carpet, a thin platform, or an uneven subfloor can let the cabinet rock during spin.
- Level: Place a spirit level on the top of the cabinet, front to back and side to side. Adjust the feet until the bubble sits centered in both directions. A small spirit level is enough for this check; it is not a fix on its own, and it does not clear the code by itself.
- Clearance: Make sure the washer is not pressed against a wall or another appliance in a way that stops it moving freely during spin, and that nothing is resting on the cabinet.
- Drain hose: Samsung Colombia’s guide for U6 and related codes also lists the drain hose’s condition and installation among its checks. Confirm the hose is not kinked or pinched and is installed as the manual describes.
Check load size and cycle selection
Samsung India publishes separate instructions for top-load and front-load washers on its unbalanced-load error pages, updated February 3, 2026. Those instructions cover three areas that affect balance:
- Load size: A very small load of one or two heavy items can be as unbalanced as a full drum. Adding a few similar items often helps.
- Distribution: Spread items evenly, and avoid stuffing a front-load drum so tightly that clothes cannot shift into position.
- Cycle choice: Select a cycle suited to the fabric. High-spin settings on bulky or heavy items are more likely to trigger imbalance detection. Follow the cycle guidance in your model’s manual.
When U6 keeps coming back
If U6 persists after you have redistributed the load and checked the washer’s level and surface, consult your model’s user manual and contact Samsung support. Samsung’s code guide links recurring unbalanced-load errors to model-specific troubleshooting rather than to one universal repair, and the official material reviewed here does not establish a single internal fault that causes U6 across all models.
Avoid treating a reset, a calibration, or a replacement part as a standard U6 fix. Those steps are not supported as a universal remedy by the manufacturer guidance on this code.

How U6 differs from Ur
Samsung’s US guide distinguishes the Ur code from the other codes in the unbalanced-load group. The behavior differs, so the two should not be handled the same way.
| Code | What Samsung US says the washer does | Your next step |
|---|---|---|
| Ur | Runs an unbalanced-load retry: the washer may add water, try to rebalance the load, and spin again. Cycle time is extended. | Allow the retry to run. If the cycle still does not finish, redistribute the load and restart. |
| U6 and the other unbalanced-load codes | The washer will fail to complete the cycle because of imbalance. | Redistribute the load, check level and surface, close the door, and press Start. Consult the model manual if the code returns. |
Confirm the exact behavior for your model in its user manual, since Samsung states that code meanings can vary.
Does U6 mean the washer is broken?
Not on its own. U6 is an imbalance code, and the manufacturer guidance treats it as a load and placement issue first. A washer that shows U6 once on a bunched load and completes the next cycle has not shown a fault. A code that repeats on a level, evenly loaded machine is the case that warrants contacting Samsung support with the model number and the exact code shown on the display.
