An offset pivot hinge places a door’s rotation axis away from the usual edge or center position. The term covers two very different scales of hardware: small pivots for cabinet and furniture doors, and architectural pivots for commercial doors. Identify the application first, then select a model that fits the door, load, clearances, and installation conditions. The exact manufacturer’s documentation—not a generic offset dimension—must guide preparation and fitting.
What an offset pivot hinge does
A pivot hinge supports a door on pivots near its top and bottom rather than relying on a conventional hinge attached along the edge. “Offset” describes the relationship between the pivot axis and the door or frame; the precise geometry depends on the product. That geometry affects how the door swings and what clearances it needs.
The term does not identify one standard size or a universal installation method. A cabinet pivot and a commercial architectural pivot are separate product families, and their dimensions, loads, and preparations should not be treated as interchangeable.
First decide which product family you need
Cabinet and furniture pivots
These are intended for smaller doors and furniture applications. Brusso documents the L-37 as an offset pivot hinge in this category, alongside other pivot models whose suitability depends in part on the thickness of the door stock. Consult the model’s product information for fit and application details: Brusso pivot hinges.

Architectural pivots
Commercial architectural hardware is designed for full-size doors and includes several configurations. The 2024 Ives/Allegion catalog lists 3/4-inch and 1-1/2-inch offset pivots, as well as center-hung, intermediate, pocket, and power-transfer pivots. These are cataloged options, not interchangeable names for the same arrangement. An intermediate pivot can help keep a door aligned with the top and bottom pivots; some intermediate pivots are load-bearing. The catalog also describes a positive-locking vertical adjustment mechanism for listed pivot hardware, but the selected model’s specification determines what applies. See the Ives Architectural Hardware Catalog (2024).
How to choose the right model
Choose from the actual door and opening, not from the phrase “offset pivot” alone. Gather these details before selecting hardware:

Brusso says its selection guidance depends on door-stock thickness and that it has conducted BHMA/ANSI testing on many pivot hinge sizes. It directs customers to provide application details for weight-rating information. This does not establish one capacity for all Brusso pivots, much less for all manufacturers. Ask for the rating and supporting documentation for the exact model and application: Brusso pivot hinges.

There is no safe universal template for all offset pivots. The L-37 installation document applies to that model; its dimensions should not be carried over to another cabinet hinge or an architectural pivot.

- Identify the exact hinge and application. Confirm the model is intended for the door’s scale and construction.
- Obtain the model-specific instructions and template before cutting. For Brusso’s L-37, use its L-37 installation instructions. For architectural hardware, use the current instructions and catalog for the selected model.
- Check the documentation against the supplied hardware and the actual opening. Verify dimensions, pivot locations, swing, and clearances before making irreversible preparations.
- Prepare and fit the door only as directed by that model’s instructions. Do not substitute a template or dimensions from a different hinge family.
- Check operation and any available adjustment using the manufacturer’s procedure. Do not assume adjustment features are present or work the same way across models.
Capacity and maintenance are model-specific
Do not infer a pivot hinge’s safe door weight from its size, brand, or another model’s rating. The available Brusso documentation directs customers to share application details to obtain weight-rating information; request the capacity for the exact hinge and installation conditions. For architectural hardware, confirm the selected model’s current specification rather than extrapolating from a catalog category.
Brusso recommends applying lubricant to the pivot pin of any of its hinges used in a high-traffic application. That is Brusso’s guidance, not a universal maintenance rule for every pivot hinge. Follow the selected manufacturer’s care instructions for other products.
