An AC replacement warranty may cover defective parts without paying for the technician, refrigerant, or other costs needed to complete the repair. Before you approve a replacement, identify the exact coverage for each piece of equipment, the registration deadline, and who pays for labor. The written warranty for your specific models and installation controls; brand examples are not universal promises.
What an AC replacement warranty may cover
“Warranty” can refer to several different promises. Check which one appears in the documents for your installation, and do not assume that coverage for one component or cost extends to the rest.
- Limited parts warranty: Covers specified replacement parts when a qualifying defect occurs, subject to the written terms. Eligibility may depend on the product, registration, application, owner, or location.
- Labor coverage: Pays some or all eligible repair labor. It may come from a manufacturer offer, an installer’s separate workmanship guarantee, or an optional service agreement. Confirm who is responsible for the promise and its limits.
- Compressor coverage: Applies to the compressor under stated conditions. It does not by itself mean the manufacturer will replace the whole AC system.
- Conditional unit-replacement coverage: May promise a replacement unit or credit after a specifically defined failure, but only for eligible equipment and installations.
- Service contract: A separately sold agreement, sometimes marketed as an “extended warranty,” distinct from the product warranty included with equipment. Compare its coverage and cost against the protections already in place. The FTC explains how service contracts differ from warranties.
A contractor’s installation workmanship guarantee is another separate promise. Ask for it in the installation contract; the manufacturer’s parts warranty does not establish what your contractor will cover.
Does an AC warranty cover labor?
Not necessarily. A parts warranty may supply or pay for an eligible component while leaving the owner responsible for diagnosis, technician labor, refrigerant, freight, disposal, or other service costs. Check each cost in the actual terms before authorizing a repair.

For example, Trane says its base and registered limited warranties cover parts, not repair labor. Optional extended coverage may include labor depending on the option selected. Carrier describes a qualifying Consumer Choice option with parts and labor coverage, subject to program requirements. These are examples of specific programs, not standard terms across the industry. See Trane’s warranty information and Carrier’s current warranty page.
What manufacturer examples show—and what they do not
The following examples come from manufacturer pages and illustrate why model, installation, registration, and location matter. They are not a substitute for the certificate that applies to your equipment.

| Carrier Consumer Choice | For eligible new equipment in existing residential replacement applications, the described choice is 10-year parts-only limited coverage or 5-year parts plus 3-year labor coverage. | Registration and selection must occur within 90 days; the labor option requires a participating dealer. New residential construction is excluded from this program. Jurisdictions that restrict registration conditions may have different default terms. Carrier |
| Trane | Its page describes a base warranty commonly lasting five years and registered limited coverage commonly lasting ten years; both are parts coverage without labor. | Registration is generally due within 60 days, but exact duration varies by product. Optional extended coverage may include labor depending on the option. U.S. state and Canadian province exclusions vary. Trane |

| Rheem | Model summaries describe conditional unit-replacement promises of five or ten years for specifically named models. | Examples tie coverage to a qualifying compressor failure and conditions that may include matched equipment, original purchaser and installation, and timely registration. Durations and deadlines in this table are published warranty-program terms, not estimates of equipment life or general consumer statistics. The complete written terms for your model and installation govern.
Does a compressor warranty replace the whole AC unit?
No—not by itself. Compressor coverage concerns one component. A whole-unit replacement or credit is a distinct, conditional promise, if offered at all. Rheem’s cited summaries, for example, apply only to named models and tie the remedy to a qualifying compressor failure and other conditions. Confirm the exact failure that triggers the remedy, what is replaced or credited, and which installation and ownership conditions apply.

Do I need to register a replacement air conditioner?
Registration can affect the coverage available, and deadlines vary by manufacturer and program. Carrier’s described Consumer Choice selection requires registration and choice within 90 days; Trane gives a general 60-day period for its registered limited coverage. Those examples do not set a universal deadline. Ask who will register each unit, when, and how you can verify acceptance. Keep the confirmation with the warranty certificate and proof of purchase.

- If optional service coverage is offered, what does it add beyond the manufacturer and installer terms? Ask about deductibles, fees, reimbursement caps, and cancellation terms.
The FTC recommends checking the duration, coverage, remedy, claims process, and labor or shipping costs. It also says a warranty must be available to read before purchase. Keep the warranty with your receipt, and get spoken promises in writing.

What to do if the replacement AC fails
- Find the warranty certificate and proof of installation or purchase. Confirm the registered model and serial numbers with the manufacturer.
- Follow the claim instructions and contact the party named as responsible. Before authorizing work, ask whether the manufacturer or contractor must approve the diagnosis, parts, or labor.
- Request an itemized estimate separating the potentially covered part from labor, refrigerant, freight, diagnostic charges, and non-covered work.
- Keep dated correspondence, service records, receipts, and the technician’s written diagnosis.
- If the written warranty does not resolve the issue, contact the seller and then the manufacturer as appropriate. For questions about state-specific implied-warranty rights, the FTC identifies state consumer protection offices as a possible resource.
