Yes—hot glue can stick to some metal surfaces, but it is best treated as a light-duty adhesive, not a dependable metal repair. The result depends on the glue formulation, surface preparation, and the heat, moisture, oils, solvents, and forces the bond will face. For anything structural, safety-critical, or exposed to significant heat, use an adhesive specifically rated for the job.
When hot glue is suitable for metal
A consumer hot melt glue stick from Bostik lists metal among the materials it can bond. That establishes that hot glue can adhere to metal; it does not guarantee a strong or lasting bond for every metal, glue stick, or application. Bostik advises users to evaluate suitability for the intended use and expected service life. Bostik’s New Zealand technical data sheet is specific to its product.
For a small, light-duty attachment—such as a temporary craft or household fix—a compatible glue stick may be worth trying. Do not rely on it for structural joints, safety-critical repairs, or parts that will be exposed to substantial heat or repeated loads unless the adhesive manufacturer specifically supports that application.
How to improve the bond
- Check compatibility. Use a hot melt stick suitable for the intended materials and confirm that it fits your glue gun. Formats and stick sizes vary; the cited Bostik sheet describes 12 mm sticks.
- Clean and dry both surfaces. Bostik’s guidance is to ensure surfaces are clean and dry. Remove residue that could interfere with contact, and let the surfaces dry before applying adhesive.
- Account for the surface finish. Bostik notes, “Usually smooth surfaces are more difficult to adhere than rough, porous surfaces.” A smooth metal surface may therefore be more challenging than a rougher one.
- Apply and join promptly. Bostik recommends applying the adhesive to the more difficult surface to bond. Its DIY hot melt glue gun directions say to press the surfaces together within 15 seconds after applying the adhesive. That timing is product-specific, not a universal open time for all hot glue.
- Assess the bond in its real conditions. Once the adhesive has set according to its own instructions, check whether it holds under the actual load and exposure the attachment will experience. Do not infer suitability for a more demanding repair from a successful light-duty test.

Heat and chemical exposure can limit the result
Bostik New Zealand Ltd’s Hot Melt Glue Stick technical data sheet, Version 3 dated 13 October 2017, gives an approximate service temperature range of -15 to +65°C for the cited product. It rates water resistance as good, solvent resistance as poor, fats and oils resistance as poor, and weak acid/alkali resistance as fair. These are product-specific typical values, not universal limits or ratings for all hot melt adhesives. Read the Bostik data sheet and check the current instructions for the adhesive you plan to use.
Why industrial hot melts are a different case
Some industrial hot melts are designed for particular metal-bonding applications, but their uses do not establish that an ordinary craft stick will perform the same way.

- 3M Scotch-Weld Hot Melt Adhesive 3747 is described as bonding many plastics, wood, and lightweight metals.
- 3M Scotch-Weld Hot Melt Adhesive 3789 lists metal and plastic bonding in appliances and describes bonds to wood and lightweight metals. On its product page, 3M says high-temperature hot melts are applied at about 380°F/193°C and produce a stronger bond than low-temperature hot melts applied at about 250°F/121°C. This is 3M’s category-level comparison, not a guarantee for other products.
- Hot Melt Technologies 761, in a sheet dated September 1, 2020, is designed primarily to bond insulation materials to metal panels in HVAC equipment, blowers, heating appliances, and similar devices.
3M says its industrial products are for trained industrial or occupational users unless the packaging or literature specifically says otherwise. Follow the intended-use guidance and handling information for any industrial product.

If the joint must tolerate meaningful loads, repeated movement or vibration, moisture, or temperature changes, compare products that explicitly cover the substrate and service conditions. Loctite markets Loctite Metal Glue for metal and other common materials; the manufacturer describes its cured bond as flexible and resistant to vibration, impact, moisture, UV rays, and temperature extremes. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent head-to-head results against hot glue.

Before choosing an adhesive, check its stated compatibility and instructions against the repair’s requirements:
- Metal type and the other surface being bonded
- Required bond strength and load
- Operating temperature
- Exposure to water, oils, fats, or solvents
- Movement or vibration
- Application and curing instructions
The available product guidance does not establish a universal winner across all metals and repairs. No cited independent comparison quantifies hot-glue strength across different metals or against metal-specific adhesives, so choose based on the exact application rather than assuming all hot glue behaves alike.
