A ceiling raft is a discrete panel or group of panels suspended below the structural ceiling, leaving the rest of the ceiling exposed. It can add a defined architectural feature, help manage sound, and accommodate services such as lighting or HVAC—but the result depends on the chosen product, layout and project conditions.

What is a ceiling raft?

Unlike a continuous suspended ceiling, a raft sits like an island below the soffit. A room may have one large raft, several smaller elements or a composition arranged to suit the space. Rafts can be acoustic or non-acoustic, and their appearance varies with material, shape, finish and suspension details. SAS International, for example, describes metal systems with mesh, raw-metal, wood-look and textile finishes, as well as potential integration of lighting and HVAC (SAS International raft systems).

Baffles are related but distinct: they are typically separate suspended elements arranged in rows, although they can also be installed individually or connected into continuous runs. Manufacturers may use terms such as raft, canopy, feature or baffle differently, so compare the actual product construction and technical documentation rather than relying on the label alone. The FIS guide discusses acoustic baffles as a separate ceiling treatment (FIS suspended-ceilings guide).

What can a ceiling raft do in a room?

Shape the interior

A raft can define a zone, create a visual focal point or introduce contrast against an exposed soffit. The design effect depends on its scale, outline, spacing, colour and material. Because the surrounding ceiling remains visible, the raft is not simply a smaller version of a full suspended ceiling: the exposed services and substrate are part of the overall composition.

Support acoustic treatment

An acoustic raft can absorb some sound energy, but performance is specific to the product and its installed arrangement. Relevant variables include panel material and thickness, coverage, spacing, orientation and the void between the panels and the ceiling. Soundtect lists NRC 0.35 for its 10 mm Solar panel and NRC 0.65 for its 20 mm panel; those figures apply to that product, not to ceiling rafts as a category (Soundtect Solar product details). Do not assume a particular reduction in noise or reverberation without suitable data for the room and proposed layout.

The 2022 Whisper brochure reports absorption figures for particular layouts and ceiling voids, and says its stated Class A classification for Whisper 40 and 50 mm products refers to EN ISO 11654. Those claims belong to the named range and its stated test arrangements; they are not a general rating for other rafts (Whisper Acoustic Panels brochure). The brochure also says sound absorption is often needed when the source and receiver are in the same room.

Leave room for services or retrofit constraints

A raft may be considered when a full suspended ceiling is not wanted or is not feasible. Knauf Ceiling Solutions’ December 2024 catalogue notes that installing a suspended ceiling “isn’t always an option” for improving acoustic comfort and reducing reverberation, and describes canopy and raft systems for such spaces (Knauf Ceiling Solutions catalogue, Chapter V). This is product guidance, not proof that a raft will suit every retrofit or outperform a full ceiling. Confirm service access, clearances and performance for the specific room.

How do ceiling raft systems differ?

Published product examples show why the system needs to be specified rather than selected by appearance alone.

Example Published details How to interpret them
SAS International acoustic floating raft The product page lists a maximum raft tile shape of 3000 × 1500 mm and system weight of 6.5 kg/m². These are listed figures for the referenced system. Confirm the current technical specification, including the exact configuration, before using them in a project.
Soundtect Freestyle Solar The product page describes a 26-piece baffle-raft set, with two adjustable fixing points per baffle. It lists NRC 0.35 at 10 mm and NRC 0.65 at 20 mm. Set composition, suspension and acoustic figures are product-specific; check the tested configuration and current installation details.
Whisper acoustic panels The 2022 brochure gives sound-absorption figures by frequency and ceiling void for particular layouts. Use the figures only with their stated layout and void; a single generalized absorption claim would lose important test context.

  • Acoustic evidence: Request test data for the specific product and review the tested thickness, coverage, spacing, orientation and ceiling void. A product rating alone does not establish performance in a different layout.
  • Coverage and available height: Establish where the raft will sit, how much of the ceiling it will cover and what clearances are needed for occupants, equipment and services. The Whisper brochure presents rafts as potentially useful where total available height is restricted or less material is desired for acoustic treatment; treat that as guidance for its products, not a universal engineering rule.
  • Appearance and material: Compare shape, finish, colour and exposed edges against the architecture. A raft remains visually distinct from the surrounding ceiling, so consider how it relates to the soffit and visible services.
  • Weight and support: Confirm the complete system weight, fixing points, suspension arrangement and suitability of the supporting substrate. Product examples vary substantially in construction, so do not infer a support design from another system’s details.
  • Services and maintenance: Coordinate lights, HVAC, speakers, sprinklers and other services with the raft layout. Consider access for maintenance and whether equipment needs independent support.

What installation and coordination require

Suspension is a project-specific design issue, not simply a matter of attaching a panel to the nearest ceiling element. The FIS guide advises checking the capacity of the supporting system and its suspension, as well as the availability of suitable fixing points, when a raft is hung from another suspended ceiling. It prefers vertical hangers where possible to avoid lateral loading. For pre-made rafts, the guide describes suspension from the soffit or ceiling system, followed by alignment and levelling, with equal support at all hangers (FIS Best Practice Guide).

The same guide calls for additional support for fittings such as lights, speakers or sprinklers in relevant site-constructed raft types. The appropriate detail depends on the selected system and project; use the manufacturer’s installation documents and have the substrate, loads, suspension, services and applicable safety requirements reviewed by qualified project professionals. FIS also notes that an acoustician may be needed to provide a correct acoustic solution.
