A camp kitchen box works best when it is sized around the stove, fuel, cookware and cargo space you actually use. Build one as a portable organization system that opens into a prep station, or choose a modular ready-made box; either way, plan for fit, setup and cleanup before packing it.
What a camp kitchen box does
A chuck box, camp kitchen box or camper kitchen box keeps cooking and prep gear together and makes it easier to reach when camp is set up. The term describes a range of designs, not a standardized product. Some are simple DIY storage boxes; others open into a work surface or stack with matching modules.
It is most useful for vehicle-supported camping, where you can transport a loaded box and set it on a stable surface. A large, heavy box is not a substitute for a lightweight backpacking kitchen kit.
How to size a DIY chuck box
Start with the equipment, not a generic box plan. REI’s build guide recommends measuring the stove with its fuel bottle attached, allowing room for the stove lid and nearby items, and measuring the tallest stored gear to determine shelf spacing. Those measurements help avoid a box that closes only when equipment is left behind. See REI’s chuck-box build guide.

#1 Best Overall
- 【Set in any terrain】: Unlike the conventional camp kitchen, which requires flat and dry ground, overland Kitchen is mounted on the vehicle and clear of the ground. You can set up the overland kitchen regardless of the ground type, such as grass, mud, hill, sand, rock, or pavement.
- 【All in one platform】:Overland Kitchen is an instant pull-out design, people can have space for washing, chopping, and cooking on the same platform.
- 【Perfect size】: Overland camping Kitchen outside has an open size: 70”x19”x11”H, folding size: 25”x19”x11”H, Stove space: 23.6”x14.5”x4.5”, suitable for camp chef stove, Coleman stove, and 90% of other 2 burners stove.
- 【Included】: Overland kitchen, 2x ratchet straps, a folding sink, support rod, trash bag holder, utensil hooks, lamp stand and paper towel holder. (water tank and stove are not included).
- 【Set up in 30 seconds】: Overland Kitchen can be set up quickly. Simply pull out and open stove. Then you are ready to prep food.
- Measure the stove and fuel configuration. Measure the stove with its fuel bottle attached if that is how you store or transport it. Account for any lid or cover that needs clearance.
- Measure the tallest items. Include cookware, bottles and tools that will sit on each shelf. Set shelf spacing to clear the tallest item in its intended position.
- Allow usable access and work space. Plan how the box opens and where utensils, prep tools and frequently used items will sit. Consider whether the opened lid or another surface gives you enough room to prepare food.
- Check vehicle fit and carrying weight. Compare the planned outside dimensions with the cargo area and decide how much loaded weight you can handle comfortably.
- Choose materials and hardware for the design. REI’s example project lists a 4′ × 8′ sheet of half-inch plywood, hinges, latches, magnetic closures, wood glue and screws. These are materials for that guide’s project, not requirements for every chuck box.
What to pack in the kitchen
Build the kit around the trip, menu and number of people. REI presents its camp-kitchen checklist as a starting point to customize, not a requirement to carry every item. Review REI’s camp-kitchen checklist.
- Cooking: stove and fuel, pots, a pan and cooking utensils suited to the meals planned.
- Food preparation: a sharp knife and cutting board, plus any tools needed for the menu.
- Eating: dishes and tableware for the group.
- Water and food handling: water containers and food-storage supplies appropriate to the destination and trip.
- Cleanup: wash bins, soap, scrubbers, towels and trash bags as needed.
Before building compartments, decide which items must stay accessible while cooking and which can be stored deeper in the box. Keep the packed kit specific to the trip rather than treating the box’s capacity as a reason to bring unnecessary gear.

DIY box or modular commercial system?
A DIY box lets you size storage around your equipment. Commercial systems offer another route: Chuk Outdoors describes its Chuk Kitchen Box as a modular, stackable powder-coated aluminum product for car camping, overlanding and van use. KASSICO describes aluminum kitchen boxes with features such as folding tables, dividers, a stove and cookware depending on the model. Those are vendor descriptions, not independent performance comparisons. Check current product specifications before buying. Chuk Outdoors product page; KASSICO product page.

Keep food and cleanup separate from box storage
A kitchen box is not automatically an approved wildlife-resistant food container. Food-storage requirements differ by camping area; some locations require bear canisters or provide bear-proof lockers. Check the current rules for your destination and use the specified storage method. REI’s food-handling and storage guidance explains why local requirements matter.
Keep food away from animals, manage trash, and follow local rules for dishwater. REI’s camp setup guidance recommends filtering food scraps from dishwater and using a designated disposal location when available; where none is available, follow the destination’s rules for dispersal and distance. Read REI’s camp-kitchen setup guidance.
