No. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is not currently moving to ban gas stoves. In August 2025, the agency said it had ended its review of public input on gas-stove emissions without further action and would not regulate those emissions or ban the category under its then-current leadership. That is a dated agency position, not a guarantee about future administrations or Congress.
How the ban story began
The 2023 headline followed remarks by CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka about possible action on gas stoves. On January 11, 2023, CPSC Chair Alexander Hoehn-Saric clarified the agency’s position: “But to be clear, I am not looking to ban gas stoves and the CPSC has no proceeding to do so.” He said the commission was researching stove emissions and exploring ways to address health risks. Read the chair’s statement.
What happened after the 2023 remarks
In March 2023, CPSC invited public input through a request for information (RFI) about potential health hazards, including any relationship to childhood asthma, and possible solutions. The agency also asked about feasibility, costs, and benefits. An RFI gathers information; it is not a proposed ban or a final regulation. Read CPSC’s RFI announcement.
In an August 20, 2025 release, CPSC said it had concluded its review of the RFI earlier that year “without further action.” The agency stated that, under its then-current leadership, it would not regulate gas-stove emissions or ban gas stoves. Read the 2025 release. Because agency policy can change, this describes CPSC’s position as of that announcement; it does not settle what a future commission or Congress might do.

How to tell discussion from regulation
These steps are different and should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Commissioner’s remarks: A commissioner may discuss possible action without the agency having opened a rulemaking.
- Request for information: The agency solicits evidence and public input. That is what CPSC did in 2023.
- Proposed rule: The agency formally proposes a regulation and provides a process for public comment.
- Final rule or ban: A completed regulatory action establishes requirements. The 2023 RFI was not one, and CPSC’s 2025 release said the review ended without further action.
What federal guidance says about gas stoves indoors
The regulatory status does not answer every health question. The joint EPA and CPSC indoor-air guide identifies combustion as a potential source of indoor pollution and notes that inadequate ventilation can allow pollutants to accumulate. It also says an improperly adjusted gas stove can emit significantly more carbon monoxide than a properly adjusted one. The materials cited here do not establish a current clinical consensus or a precise causal estimate for gas-stove exposure and childhood asthma; the RFI itself is not proof of a particular health outcome.

The guide recommends installing and using an exhaust fan over a gas cooking stove, keeping burners properly adjusted, and never using a gas stove to heat a home. It says: “Using a stove hood with a fan vented to the outdoors greatly reduces exposure to pollutants during cooking.” This is a mitigation measure, not a promise of zero exposure. If you are planning a kitchen, discuss exhaust design before cabinets and finishes are finalized. The guidance supports a range hood that exhausts outdoors as a way to reduce exposure while cooking; it does not compare hood models or certify particular products. A recirculating hood is not the same as outdoor exhaust, and ventilation should not be described as removing every pollutant.
