Choose a bearing by matching its load direction and magnitude to the job, then check available space, misalignment, speed, precision, stiffness, sealing and installation requirements. Deep-groove ball bearings are versatile for moderate radial loads; needle bearings fit tight radial spaces; cylindrical rollers handle high radial loads; angular-contact and tapered rollers suit combined loads; spherical and toroidal rollers can accommodate heavy loads and misalignment; and thrust bearings are designed primarily for axial loads. These are starting points, not universal recommendations: a suitable bearing must also match the equipment’s dimensions and operating specification.
How to choose a bearing
Start by identifying the forces the bearing must carry and the direction they act. Then narrow the options by the available space and whether the shaft may deflect or become misaligned. Finally, check operating speed, precision, noise, stiffness and the practical requirements for fitting, lubrication and maintenance.
- Identify the loads. Separate radial loads, which act perpendicular to the shaft, from axial (thrust) loads, which act along it. Note whether axial forces can reverse. For combined loads, the bearing’s contact geometry matters: a larger contact angle generally allows greater axial load capacity. SKF’s rolling-bearing catalog illustrates how bearing types suit different load conditions.
- Check the envelope. The shaft bore may already be fixed by the machine. If radial space is tight, a needle bearing can provide capacity in a compact cross-section; otherwise, compare the available deep-groove, cylindrical, tapered, spherical and toroidal designs against the housing space. SKF’s bearing-type guide describes these broad options.
- Account for misalignment and deflection. If the shaft and housing may not remain perfectly aligned, consider a self-aligning design, particularly for heavy loads. The expected axial displacement also matters when choosing between designs and arranging the shaft support.
- Compare operating demands. Ball bearings often offer lower friction and suit higher speeds than similarly sized roller bearings, while rollers generally carry heavier loads. This is a broad family-level comparison, not a speed or capacity rating: the exact design, row count, preload, precision and cage all affect performance.
- Plan the installation and upkeep. Confirm fits, clearance or preload, lubrication and its supply method, sealing, mounting and dismounting access, and maintenance requirements before specifying a bearing.
Common bearing types and what they are used for

What else matters beyond bearing type
A family name alone does not specify a bearing for a machine. The required fit on the shaft and in the housing, internal clearance or preload, lubricant and how it is supplied, cage material and guidance, dimensional stability, precision, seals, mounting method and maintenance all affect the final choice. SKF’s bearing-selection-process overview treats these as parts of selection, not afterthoughts.
That is why replacing a bearing with another of the same outside dimensions is not enough unless the original specification and operating conditions are known. SKF cautions in its bearing-type guide that selection requires weighing multiple factors and does not yield a universal rule. Match the machine’s full requirements and the bearing manufacturer’s guidance before ordering or fitting a replacement.
