Chrysanthemum is the flower most consistently recognized as November’s birth flower. Some lists pair it with peony, but that is a customary alternate association, not a universal standard—and peonies usually bloom in late spring or early summer, not November.
Why do November birth-flower lists differ?
Birth flowers are a tradition, not a list governed by one global authority. The Old Farmer’s Almanac names chrysanthemum alone for November, while some contemporary guides add peony. It is most accurate to call chrysanthemum November’s commonly recognized birth flower and peony an alternate association found on some lists.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac describes the chrysanthemum as “the flower most associated with the fall season, providing the last pop of color in the garden.” Read its November birth-flower guide.
What do chrysanthemums and peonies symbolize?
Chrysanthemum
The Old Farmer’s Almanac associates chrysanthemums with loyalty, friendship, and joy. It also notes that meaning can vary by color and culture: red may represent true love, white innocence and honesty, and yellow a wounded heart or neglected love. In parts of Europe, chrysanthemums can be associated with sorrow and mourning, while in China and Japan they may be linked with youth and long life. These are cultural traditions, not meanings every recipient will share.

- Paeony thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with good organic content.
- The flowers are often large, often 6 to 10 inches or more in diameter. They have multiple layers of petals, giving them a lush appearance.
- They prefer full sun to light shade.
- Paeony is commonly used as an ornamental plant in gardens, flower beds and parterres.
Peony
Peony is included as a November birth-flower association on some lists, but its symbolism and inclusion are not consistent across references. Treat it as an alternate symbolic choice rather than the seasonally blooming November flower. The variation in lists is discussed in The Old Farmer’s Almanac’s November guide and LEGO’s birth-flower article.
Why is peony a November birth flower if it blooms in spring?
A birth-flower pairing is a symbolic calendar association; it does not mean both flowers bloom in the birth month. The Old Farmer’s Almanac places the peony’s normal flowering season in late spring to early summer. Chrysanthemums, by contrast, are strongly associated with fall. If seasonal timing matters for a bouquet or garden, the peony’s November listing should not be taken as a promise of November blooms. See the Almanac’s peony flowering information.

- Flower characteristics: Chrysanthemums come in various shapes, including single petals, semi-double petals, double petals, pompoms, etc. The petals can be narrow or wide, and the center can be disc-shaped or button-shaped.
- Blooming Season: Chrysanthemums typically bloom in late summer and fall, making them a popular choice for adding color to fall landscapes and gardens. Flowering time may vary depending on variety and growing conditions.
- Cultivation: Chrysanthemums prefer well-drained soil and full sun to low light. They require regular watering, especially during growth and flowering.
- Sowing rate: 2 seeds per plant. This flower seed can be started indoors 2 - 4 weeks before last spring's frost. Sow the seeds in a container over a good seed starting mix. Do not cover the seeds or lightly cover the seeds. Keep chrysanthemum seeds moist after planting.
- The chrysanthemum rainbow mix comes in purple, orange, red, rose, yellow and white for a dazzling display of color. Painted daisies also make beautiful cut flowers, allowing you to bring color indoors!
What is a thoughtful November birth-flower gift?
A chrysanthemum bouquet is a direct way to mark the more consistently recognized November association; Interflora also discusses chrysanthemums as birthday flowers. Read Interflora’s birthday-flower guide. A non-living alternative is LEGO’s Botanicals Chrysanthemum building set, set 10368, which LEGO identifies in its November birth-flower article. It is a decorative build, not a live plant; check the official listing for current product details and availability: LEGO Botanicals and November’s birth flower.
