1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo keep a cabinet carcass square while the glue sets, check each corner with a framing square and compare the two diagonals across the front. If the diagonal measurements differ, clamp across the longer diagonal until they match. Dry-clamp first so you can confirm the fit and position the clamps before applying glue.
1. Check the corners with a framing square
Once the carcass is assembled and clamped, place a framing square at the corners to check that the adjoining parts meet at right angles. This is a useful local check, but it does not by itself establish that the whole rectangular carcass is square.
2. Compare the diagonals and correct the assembly
Measure from opposite corners across the front of the carcass in both directions. The measurements should match. If they do not, the carcass is out of square.
- Identify which diagonal is longer.
- Place a clamp across the two corners at the ends of the longer diagonal.
- Tighten gradually, checking both diagonal measurements as the carcass shifts.
- Stop when the measurements match, then leave the clamps in place for at least one hour, as WOOD Magazine’s procedure recommends.
Install the cabinet back immediately after unclamping to avoid straining the joints, following the same procedure.

Prepare the carcass before glue-up
Dry-clamp the parts first to check their fit and work out clamp placement. Prepare parts with straight edges and faces that are appropriately parallel and perpendicular before assembly; clamps cannot compensate for poorly prepared stock.
For fixed shelves seated in dadoes, use cauls to spread clamping pressure along the joints. When fitting dadoes in plywood, measure the actual sheet thickness rather than relying on its nominal label. Cut the dadoes so the cabinet can be assembled without hammering on the plywood. Inconspicuous glue blocks are one possible way to reinforce joints.

Clamps and squares can help, but still measure
- Parallel-jaw clamps: Woodcraft describes these as useful for casework because their jaws stay at 90° to the clamp bar and can help keep a carcass square during clamping. Check the diagonals anyway and adjust if needed. Woodcraft’s clamp guidance does not make the clamps a substitute for measurement.
- Clamping squares: These can position or hold box, drawer, and cabinet corners square during glue-up. That intended use is described by the seller; it is not an independent accuracy test. Treat them as a holding aid, then verify the carcass with its diagonals. See the clamping-square product description.
Keep panel glue-ups separate from carcass squaring
For edge-glued panels, clamp alignment is a separate concern: clamps that are not aligned can shift boards during glue-up. WOOD Magazine’s grid method for aligned clamp-ups is intended to help place clamps parallel to one another and square to panel edges. It does not replace the diagonal check for a rectangular cabinet carcass.
