China’s Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge opened to traffic in Guizhou on September 28, 2025. Its deck sits 625 meters above the Beipan River, the measurement behind its description as the world’s highest bridge. It spans a canyon; the available project accounts do not establish that engineers literally “split a mountain in two.”
What is China’s highest bridge?
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is a highway bridge crossing the Huajiang Grand Canyon over the Beipan River in Guizhou, southwest China. The State Council portal, reporting from Xinhua on September 29, 2025, says it opened the previous day. How high and how long is the bridge?
The same opening report gives the bridge’s deck-to-river height as 625 meters, its total length as 2,890 meters, and its main span as 1,420 meters. These figures describe different dimensions: total length covers the bridge, while the main span is the distance across its principal unsupported section.

China Daily’s September 29, 2025 infographic separately labels the bridge height as 625 meters and compares the total tower height—around 648 meters—to roughly two Eiffel Towers. Did engineers really split a mountain in two?
That wording is not supported as a literal construction description in the cited official project accounts. They describe a bridge spanning the Huajiang Grand Canyon. The exact origin or intended meaning of “split a mountain in two” is not established by those accounts, so it is more accurate to say the bridge crosses a deep canyon.
Why was the bridge built?
The bridge carries a highway route linking the Liuzhi area and Anlong, cutting the time needed to cross the canyon. Xinhua’s September 29, 2025 opening report put the drive at about two minutes, compared with around two hours before the bridge. A 2024 Xinhua report estimated the post-bridge crossing at about one minute. The reports therefore differ on the approximate new crossing time; both describe a dramatic reduction. What made construction challenging?
The project began in 2022. In a September 25, 2025 pre-opening report, Xinhua described wind resistance and construction at high altitude among the engineering challenges. The report also quoted Zhang Yin, head of Guizhou’s provincial transport department, as saying the project had 21 authorized patents.
