Turn and hollow the bowl first; add the yarn opening and side slot after the bowl form is established. In Brian Simmons’s WOOD magazine demonstration, the bowl was roughed from green wood, dried, and returned to the lathe for final shaping. The dimensions and techniques below describe that project, not universal requirements.

Tools and preparation

You need a lathe with suitable bowl-turning capacity, a securely mounted bowl blank, a bowl gouge, a scraper for the foot, calipers, a drill, a fine-tooth saw blade, and abrasives for sanding and smoothing the slot. Workholding and protective equipment matter as much as the cutting tools.

Woodcraft’s overview of getting started in turning explains that lathe choice depends on the work, space, budget, and experience. A pen lathe generally lacks the power or capacity for much bowl turning; mini and midi lathes have different capacities. Check the machine’s specifications against the bowl blank and follow its manual rather than assuming any lathe can safely hold the work. Woodcraft’s turning overview provides general tool and capacity context.

Work safely before turning

The American Association of Woodturners’ guidance is direct: “Wear a full face shield any time the lathe is on.” Tie back long hair; avoid gloves, loose clothing, and jewelry; and make sure the work is firmly mounted. With the lathe off, rotate the work by hand to confirm it clears the tool rest and bed. Start at a low speed until you know the work is balanced. If the lathe or bowl shakes, stop and investigate rather than continuing.

Remove the tool rest before sanding, finishing, or polishing. For sanding and other dusty work, use dust protection along with dust collection and good ventilation. The AAW page’s speed table is specifically for spindle work, so do not treat its values as a bowl-turning speed chart. See AAW Lathe Safety Basics and follow your lathe manual. If you are new to turning, get hands-on instruction before attempting this project.

Turn and hollow the bowl

Mount and shape the outside

For the demonstrated project, Simmons mounted a dried bowl that had been roughed earlier from green wood. He placed the chuck jaws inside the bowl’s recess and tightened the chuck while holding the bowl firmly in place. Mounting methods vary with the lathe, chuck, bowl, and operator; verify that your setup is secure before switching on the machine.

  • Small Object Organizer: When you're not knitting, you can use your yarn bowl to hold small items, The yarn bowls for crocheting have the right size and weight, are easy to carry around, so you can knit anytime.

Use a bowl gouge to true and shape the outside. Simmons demonstrates a shear-scraping cut with the flute rolled roughly 90 degrees, the handle kept low, and the tool drawn across the wood. He uses a square-nose scraper to shape the foot. These are the demonstrator’s techniques, not a substitute for learning safe tool handling.

Shape the rim and hollow the interior

True the rim, then hollow the bowl with a bowl gouge using a bevel-rubbing cut. Check wall thickness with calipers as you work. Simmons recommends leaving extra material in the bottom during hollowing to help support the work while it vibrates; remove that material as appropriate when refining the interior and finishing the base.

The example’s finished interior depth is around 2 5/8 inches. That is a measurement from this project, not a standard for yarn bowls. Choose the bowl’s size for the yarn you use, the space where it will sit, and what your lathe and blank can safely accommodate. The WOOD magazine walkthrough, “Turning a Yarn Bowl”, documents the project’s steps and dimensions.

Sand the turned bowl

Reduce the lathe speed before sanding to limit heat buildup. Remove the tool rest first, as the AAW recommends for sanding and finishing. Keep dust protection, dust collection, and ventilation in place while sanding.

Drill the opening and cut the yarn slot

Drill from both sides

Mark the yarn opening where it will lead into the bowl. Drill perpendicular to the bowl surface, then turn the bowl over and drill from the opposite side. In Simmons’s project, drilling from both faces helps reduce tear-out on either side of the opening.

Connect the opening to the rim

Cut a slot from the opening toward the rim with a fine-tooth blade. Simmons uses a blade of about 20 teeth per inch. Treat that as the blade used in the demonstration, not a mandatory specification; select a blade suitable for the material and cut you need.

Sand the slot, starting with coarser paper, and round over its edges. Work the full yarn path, including the drilled opening and the slot’s entry and exit, so there are no rough edges likely to catch fibers. A smooth, rounded path is the goal; the demonstration does not establish a tested guarantee that yarn will never snag. Consider the yarn thickness when deciding the slot’s width and curve, and remove material gradually so you can check the result.

Reverse the bowl and finish the bottom

To finish the base, Simmons reverses the bowl using a shop-made adapter and a scrap-wood jam chuck. He shapes a slight concavity so the finished bowl sits flat. A jam chuck or adapter must suit the particular lathe and bowl and hold the work securely; do not copy a setup unless you can confirm it is appropriate for your equipment and skill. Follow the lathe manual and seek instruction if you are unfamiliar with reverse mounting.

Choose dimensions and details for your use

The documented project does not establish a universal bowl size, slot profile, or best wood species. Make these decisions around your yarn, workspace, blank, and ability to mount and turn the work safely. A wider or more curved slot is not automatically better: the useful design is one that fits the yarn and can be cut and smoothed cleanly. Choose wood and a blank condition you can handle confidently and secure reliably.
