Transforming Old Furniture into Unique Plant Displays

Turn a dresser drawer, bookcase, or chair into a plant display by choosing between direct planting and separate pots, then plan for drainage, moisture, and plant needs.

First decide whether the furniture will hold soil directly or simply display pots. Direct planting can make a drawer or bookcase feel like a built-in planter, but it requires drainage and exposes the material to moisture. Pots in or on the furniture are easier to maintain and better for pieces you want to keep dry or avoid modifying.

Choose a display style before you start

Approach Best suited to Main consideration
Plant directly in furniture A drawer or converted bookcase designed to contain soil Provide drainage and account for ongoing moisture exposure.
Arrange pots on or in furniture Indoor displays, valuable pieces, or furniture you do not want to drill Use saucers or trays to catch runoff, and do not leave standing water on wood.
Use furniture as a support A sound chair, table, or shelf used as a plant stand Keep the plant in its own pot or insert rather than filling the furniture with wet soil.

For an old piece with an unknown finish or metal parts, separate pots are the cautious option. Oregon State University Extension’s response to a question about a repurposed filing cabinet notes the possibility of contaminants in metal or paint; it does not establish that every old cabinet is contaminated. Its conservative suggestion is to use separate planters in the openings or limit direct planting to ornamentals. Read the Extension response.

Turn a dresser drawer into a planter

Fit the drawer to the plants

Choose a drawer with enough depth for the plants you intend to grow. A shallow drawer limits the soil available to roots, so do not assume every plant will suit it. Oklahoma State University Extension advises considering both soil volume and temperature when using unusual containers. Its guidance on upcycled containers explains why container conditions matter.

Build in a way for water to leave

If planting directly, carefully drill drainage holes through the drawer bottom. Oregon State University Extension specifically recommends drainage holes for an old dresser drawer used as a garden container, and says containers should have drainage holes generally. See its upcycling and container guidance.

With this thoughtful design, your plants thrive with minimal maintenance.

A planter liner can help keep soil and water off the wood, but it does not replace drainage. Arrange the liner so excess water can escape rather than pooling around roots or against the drawer. HGTV’s drawer project suggests lining drawers that will be watered in place. View the drawer display ideas.

Make a tiered display without converting every drawer

For a more flexible porch or patio display, pull drawers out to different depths and place potted plants on them or on the dresser top. Staggering creates varied levels without requiring each drawer to become a soil-filled container; use saucers or trays beneath pots wherever water could reach the furniture.

Convert a bookcase into a vertical planter

A bookcase can be adapted into several trough-like planting levels, a more involved project than simply placing pots on its shelves. The Royal Horticultural Society describes rearranging a bookcase for planting and lining its interior with plastic sheeting to help prevent the wood from becoming damp and rotting. The liner still needs a drainage plan if the levels hold soil. See the RHS small-space planter project.

If you want a simpler, reversible version, leave the shelves intact and arrange individual pots on them. Add trays beneath the pots and avoid letting water sit on the shelf surface.

Use a chair or other furniture as a plant stand

A sound chair can support a pot or a separate insert, turning the seat into a small display platform without exposing the furniture to wet soil. This is an adaptable design idea rather than a tested chair-conversion method: check that the chair is stable and that the pot cannot slide or tip. The same principle works for a side table, cabinet, or sturdy shelf.

Match plants and placement to the container

Check depth, heat, and exposure

Unusual containers can warm or dry differently from standard garden beds. Consider how much soil the roots need and how hot the container may become in its intended location, as Oklahoma State University Extension advises. A shallow drawer in a sunny outdoor spot may not suit a plant that needs more root room or consistently cool soil.

Choose herbs for suitable small spaces

The RHS lists parsley, sage, mint, basil, chives, and thyme among herbs suitable for small-space containers. Match the plant to the drawer’s depth and growing conditions rather than treating the list as a guarantee that every herb will thrive in every piece of furniture. The RHS project includes its herb suggestions.

Be cautious with edible crops in reclaimed furniture

When the furniture’s material or old paint is unknown, use pots or inserts for edible plants unless its suitability is established. A weatherproof coating can help protect outdoor wood, but it is not evidence that reclaimed furniture or its finish is food-safe.

Plan differently for indoors and outdoors

Indoor displays

  • Use separate pots when you want to preserve the furniture or keep the project reversible.
  • Put saucers or trays under pots to catch watering runoff.
  • Empty collected water rather than leaving it against wood.

Outdoor wooden displays

  • Expect the piece to encounter damp conditions and protect the wood accordingly.
  • For direct planting, provide drainage as well as a liner; a liner that traps water can leave roots waterlogged and wood persistently wet.
  • Use an exterior paint or sealant appropriate to the intended setting, while keeping in mind that a coating does not establish food safety for unknown reclaimed materials.

Homebuilding & Renovating’s garden planter guidance recommends exterior protection, lining, and drainage for repurposed wooden planters. See its outdoor planter ideas.

Materials and practical checks

Depending on the design, gather a drill and suitable bit for drainage holes, a planter liner or plastic sheeting, container potting mix, and exterior wood paint or sealant for an outdoor wooden piece. These are general material categories, not recommendations for a particular brand.

  • Before drilling: confirm that direct planting is the right choice and that the furniture can be modified.
  • Before adding soil: make sure water has a route out and that the liner will not trap it.
  • Before choosing plants: check that the available soil depth and placement suit them.
  • Before growing food: consider whether the furniture’s material and finish are known and appropriate.
