Checking the fit for your room and skill level
A 55-inch length is the first constraint to test. Measure the wall or alcove where the piece will stand, subtract the clearance you need on each side for opening doors and drawers, and compare the result to the stated length. The 19-inch depth is also worth checking against any walkway or against the depth of a wall-mounted fixture above it.
- Wall length: measure the available run and allow clearance at each end for doors, hardware, and any trim.
- Depth: confirm the 19-inch depth clears switches, radiators, or a dining chair pulled back to the cabinet.
- Height: 41 inches is a moderate height for a sideboard, but check it against any mirror, shelf, or picture rail above.
- Weight and transport: a full oak cabinet of this size is heavy, so plan for a helper and a route through doorways before cutting.
- Skill level: the listings do not say whether the plan assumes hand-tool joinery, power-tool joinery, or a mix. Read the joinery section before deciding whether the project matches your experience.
Choosing between the downloadable and paper formats
The same named project is available in two formats, and they are not interchangeable in every respect. The distinction matters for how you will use the plan in the shop.

What the available listings do not establish
The published descriptions for the WOOD Magazine plan are high-level. They do not show the full cut list, the construction sequence, the joinery schedule, or the tool list. Do not assume details from another sideboard design. Check the following in the plan itself before buying supplies:
- Cut list with final board sizes and quantities, including whether it uses solid oak boards, panels, or both.
- Joinery for the carcase, drawer boxes, and face frame, and the tools each joint requires.
- Hardware: drawer runners, hinges, shelf supports, and pulls.
- Finish and assembly sequence, including whether the back is a panel and how the top is fixed.
- Whether the plan includes exploded views, photos, or only working drawings.
How the alternatives compare

Woodsmith Classic Sideboard
The Woodsmith plan is the better comparison if you want a materials list, cutting diagrams, and joinery guidance spelled out in the plan. Its listing describes a technique article on twin mortise-and-tenon joints, which is a useful reference for hand-cut or machine-cut joinery, though it applies to that design rather than the WOOD Magazine oak sideboard.
Kreg dining room sideboard
The Kreg plan is a more contemporary approach. Its listed proportions are much smaller, and it uses pocket-hole screws and glue. It shows how a shallower, lower sideboard is built with different joinery, but its dimensions and methods say nothing about how the WOOD Magazine cabinet is constructed.

Historical proportions
The National Gallery of Art catalog record describes a mahogany sideboard drawing from the Index of American Design, with measured original dimensions of 40.5 inches high, 76 inches long, and 29 inches maximum width. It is a useful reference for how older sideboards were proportioned, particularly the relationship between length and height, but it is a catalog record of a drawing rather than a construction plan, and it should not be used as a template for the WOOD Magazine project.
