The WOOD Store listing describes a compact bench with storage and decorative details. It credits the project to WOOD Issue 222, November 2013; the web page was updated January 9, 2024. View the WOOD plan listing.

- Design details: curved ends, angled drawers, contrasting walnut drawer faces, and a secret drawer.
- Build information: the public listing does not provide the complete cut list, materials list, joinery details, or hardware specifications. Refer to the downloadable plan for those project-specific instructions.
How to compare this plan with other toy-box benches
Compare a plan’s footprint and height, storage layout, joinery and skill requirements, completeness of its cut list, and lid-support design. The WOOD plan’s drawers and concealed compartment are not the same layout as a basic chest or a convertible toy chest.
For context only, a separate Kreg Craftsman Toy Box Bench plan specifies 3/4-inch plywood, 1×3, 1×6, and 1×2 stock, pocket-hole joinery, and two concealed hinges. Those specifications belong to that Kreg design; they are not verified parts or hardware for the WOOD plan. See the Kreg Craftsman plan. Kreg also lists a separate convertible chest design with a universal lid support and narrow hinges; that hardware should not be attributed to the WOOD project. See the convertible chest plan.

Build in a lid that stays safely open
A toy-box lid can injure a child if it falls while the child is reaching inside, and a child trapped in a poorly ventilated chest can be at risk of suffocation. In a March 5, 2014 safety release, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advised that a lid support should keep the lid open in every position. It also said ventilation holes should not be blocked by a floor or wall. Read the CPSC safety guidance.
Choose and install lid-support hardware for the actual lid’s size and weight, and follow its manufacturer’s instructions. Do not assume that a hinge described as soft-close or a support used in a different plan is suitable for this build. The CPSC’s 2014 release reported 34 deaths involving children younger than 18 since 1996 and said about 27 companies had taken action to correct more than 14 million toy and storage chests. Those are historical figures reported in that release, not current rates.

Standards are context, not a compliance claim
ASTM lists F963-23 as an active toy safety specification, last updated October 13, 2023; its contents include toy chests and testing for toy-chest lids and closures. ASTM F834 is a consumer safety specification specifically for toy chests.
