Toro vs. Honda Snow Blowers: How to Choose the Right Model

Toro and Honda each offer multiple snow-blower configurations. Choose by your driveway, snow, terrain, storage, and local service—not brand reputation alone.

Neither Toro nor Honda is the automatic winner. Choose by matching a specific model to your snow, driveway, terrain, storage space, and service options. Toro’s two-stage lineup includes Power Max and Power Max HD; Honda’s U.S. two-stage lineup includes wheel- and track-drive HSS models. Compare machines in the same job class, and treat advertised capacity and throwing distance as manufacturer specifications—not independent head-to-head results.

Start with the job, not the brand

Before comparing logos, consider the snow you typically clear and the route it takes from the driveway to its discharge area. A short, mostly level paved drive in moderate snow creates different demands from a long drive, recurring deep or heavy snow, a slope, or an uneven surface. Clearing width matters, but so do cut height, stated capacity, traction, controls, weight, and dimensions.

Use each company’s model guidance to narrow the field, then compare exact configurations. Toro’s two-stage page presents its Power Max and Power Max HD families and points buyers toward driveway type and size, stage, and available options. Honda’s U.S. two-stage lineup includes several widths and both wheel- and track-drive versions in parts of the range. Toro two-stage snow blowers · Honda two-stage snow blowers

When a smaller machine may fit

For a smaller, mostly level paved area with moderate snow, begin with narrower, less demanding models and check their manufacturer guidance against your typical conditions. A two-stage machine is not automatically necessary just because you are choosing between these brands.

  • Power Up: Powerful 208cc Briggs & Stratton 950 snow series engine delivers 2700 lbs/min snow plowing capacity. Ideal for 1-12 in. of snow.
  • Self-Propelled Drive System: Quickly and easily cut through icy snow with variable speed control, forward and reverse.

  • Two-Stage Technology: All-steel auger easily cuts through tough icy snow, and the high-speed steel impeller throws snow 45 ft away.

When to compare wider two-stage machines

If you regularly clear a larger area or encounter deep, heavy snow, compare wider models using their stated capacity, cut height, traction, and weight. A wider machine may reduce passes, but its published performance figures do not guarantee the same result in every snow condition.

What the published Honda specifications show

Honda’s comparison page lists these specifications for selected HSS two-stage configurations. The figures are Honda-published specifications; the cited comparison does not establish test conditions or an independent test method.

Honda configuration Clearing width Maximum discharge capacity Maximum discharge distance Drive and speed control
HSS724AT / HSS724ATD 23.8 in. 1,500 lb/min 49 ft Track drive; hydrostatic speed control
HSS928AT / HSS928ATD 28 in. 1,900 lb/min 52 ft Track drive; hydrostatic speed control
HSS1332AT / HSS1332ATD 31.9 in. 2,750 lb/min 56 ft Track drive; hydrostatic speed control

These are not a Toro-versus-Honda test, and maximum throw is not a promise of a fixed distance in every snowfall. For the configurations compared, Honda describes the hydrostatic system as allowing infinitely variable ground speed independently of auger speed: “Auger speed is completely independent from ground speed.” Honda’s HSS comparison · Honda’s hydrostatic-drive description

Match traction and controls to your terrain

Wheel drive or track drive

Honda offers wheel- and track-drive versions in parts of its HSS lineup; do not assume every Honda model has the same drive configuration. For a slope, packed snow, or uneven ground, investigate the exact track-drive model and its adjustability. Also account for the machine’s weight and how easily you can maneuver or store it. The relevant comparison is the configuration’s fit for your terrain, not a blanket claim that tracks are always better.

Speed, steering, and chute operation

Check how each model manages ground speed, steering assistance, and chute direction. Honda describes hydrostatic drive on the HSS724, HSS928, and HSS1332 families as infinitely variable, with ground speed independent from auger speed. Compare Toro’s controls by exact model rather than assuming that features are uniform across Power Max models.

Starting method and included equipment

Honda model listings distinguish recoil-only and electric-start suffixes. For Toro battery models, verify the specific battery and charger included in the configuration; do not assume they come with every listing. Starting preference is a model-level decision, not a brand-wide distinction.

Consider power source, size, and storage

Toro’s 2024–25 brochure covers gas and 60V battery snow-blower families with different widths and auger systems. Its battery-family guidance describes driveways that can hold up to nine cars and snow depths of 2–9 inches; that is product-family positioning, not a capacity guarantee for every Toro model. Match the guidance to the exact current model and your conditions. Toro’s 2024–25 snow-blower brochure

Before choosing a wider or heavier machine, measure storage space and consider transport, turning room, and maneuverability. Use model-level dimensions and weight where available; width alone does not tell you how practical a machine will be around your property.

A practical model-selection checklist

  1. Describe your clearing job: note the driveway’s approximate area, typical snow depth and density, surface, slope, and where you can discharge snow.
  2. Choose the job class: use each manufacturer’s current guidance to decide whether a narrower machine or a larger two-stage model is appropriate.
  3. Compare exact configurations: check width, cut height, stated capacity, discharge distance, drive type, speed and chute controls, start method, weight, and dimensions.
  4. Check fit and ownership: confirm storage and maneuvering space, current warranty, local dealer support, parts compatibility, and what equipment is included.
  5. Get current local prices: compare out-the-door quotes for the same job class and configuration rather than relying on a brand-level price assumption.
