The best plants to grow beneath a tree depend on more than shade: check how dry the soil gets, how much room roots leave, and whether the canopy is deciduous or evergreen. For early color, tuck small spring bulbs between roots; for longer coverage, choose foliage perennials or a groundcover suited to the site’s moisture. Plant gently, since a mature tree’s shallow feeder roots need protection.

Start by assessing the space beneath the tree

Shade beneath a tree often comes with competition for water, nutrients, and root space. Dry soil can be as limiting as low light, so a plant described as shade-tolerant may still struggle if it needs consistently moist ground.

Before choosing plants, observe the area through the day and note whether the tree is deciduous or evergreen, where the soil stays driest, and how much room is available between visible roots. The RHS advises that evergreen conifer sites can be especially challenging because they combine year-round shade with dry soil; the lighter, wetter side of a tree may offer better planting conditions than its drier, more shaded side. See the RHS guidance on planting under trees for its site-assessment advice.

Root space is limited near many mature trees. An Ask Extension response dated December 28, 2024, gives general guidance that “Most of the feeder roots of a mature tree grow in the top 18-inches of soil, and can spread 2 to 3 times the width of the mature canopy.” That is an attributed extension estimate, not a measurement that applies uniformly to every tree. Deborah J. Benoit, a University of Vermont Extension Master Gardener, also notes: “Any plants sharing soil will compete with one another for resources, whether that’s water, nutrients, or even a place to spread their roots.”

Choose an underplanting style that fits the site

Spring bulbs for a brief burst of color

Small spring bulbs such as snowdrops (Galanthus), grape hyacinth (Muscari armeniacum), and Siberian squill (Scilla siberica) can flower before a deciduous tree leafs out. That seasonal window makes them a good choice when you want early color without filling the area with persistent summer foliage. UVM Extension recommends placing small bulbs individually among roots to limit disturbance; see its planting-under-trees guidance.

Best suited to: sites beneath deciduous trees where spring light reaches the ground and a seasonal display is welcome. Bulbs still need suitable local growing conditions, and planting should not require cutting roots.

Foliage perennials for a layered woodland look

For a longer-lasting mix of foliage and flowers, consider shade-tolerant perennials such as hosta, lady’s mantle (Alchemilla mollis), fringed bleeding heart (Dicentra eximia), foamflower (Tiarella), and coral bells (Heuchera). The RHS also lists hardy cyclamen and bergenia as possibilities beneath trees. These are examples, not a universal planting list: check local climate and the moisture needs of each plant before buying.

Best suited to: spots with enough light and soil moisture for the selected perennial, and enough root-free room for planting and later maintenance. A mixed planting can provide varied leaf shapes and bloom times, but avoid forcing plants into dry, crowded ground simply because they tolerate shade.

Groundcover instead of struggling turf

Where grass performs poorly in shade, a groundcover can provide a more suitable planted surface. Iowa State Extension includes barrenwort (Epimedium), Canadian wild ginger (Asarum canadense), foamflower, and hosta among shade-tolerant groundcover options. Their moisture needs differ: barrenwort can tolerate dry shade, while wild ginger prefers moist, organic soil. The Iowa State groundcover guidance is specific to Iowa, so use it as an options list rather than proof that every plant suits every region.

Best suited to: areas where turf is failing and you can match the groundcover to the site’s moisture, mature size, and spread. Some groundcovers spread aggressively; check local ecological guidance and allow for boundaries or maintenance where needed.

Shrubs only where there is room to plant gently

Shrubs may work under a higher canopy if there is adequate light, moisture, and root-free planting room. Low branches that spread close to the ground can leave little practical space, so consider the canopy edge instead. Do not excavate a large shrub hole through mature tree roots; the RHS recommends assessing site conditions before extending the plant palette.

Plant with as little root disturbance as possible

  1. Clear the planting spots by hand. Remove grass and weeds without digging broadly beneath the canopy.
  2. Use starter-sized plants and a hand trowel. Make each hole only as large as the root ball requires, following UVM Extension’s planting guidance.
  3. Move the planting spot if a large root blocks the hole. Do not cut large roots to fit a plant.
  4. Apply only a thin layer of mulch. Keep it off exposed roots and leave the tree trunk area clear.
  5. Water while plants establish. Water deeply during hot, dry periods. The RHS advises watering during dry spells for at least the first full growing season; local planting seasons and water needs vary. It also suggests autumn planting so plants can establish before deciduous leaves return, where that timing suits the local climate.

Check local suitability before settling on a plant

Plant lists vary by region and source: Iowa State’s groundcover recommendations are Iowa-specific, RHS advice reflects UK horticulture, and UC ANR examples are for California. Verify that a plant suits your location and the tree’s conditions rather than assuming it is native, non-invasive, or appropriate for a particular hardiness zone.

Tree species can matter, too. Black walnut can inhibit some plants through juglone, but UVM Extension identifies wild ginger, ostrich fern, and serviceberry as examples that can grow beneath it. That does not mean all plants tolerate black walnut, or that every tree has the same effect.
