It is one useful part of a window’s design—not a guarantee of lower energy bills or a substitute for comparing the whole window’s certified ratings, construction and installation.
Why consider argon in double glazing?
It reduces heat transfer through the space between panes
Heat can move across the cavity between glass panes by conduction and convection. Argon conducts heat less readily than air, so using it as a fill gas can reduce heat transfer through that part of an insulating glass unit (IGU). The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) describes argon as inexpensive, nontoxic, nonreactive, clear and odorless. Its 2024 THERM7 / WINDOW7 NFRC Simulation Manual gives an optimal argon spacing similar to air, at roughly 1/2 inch (12 mm). NFRC Simulation Manual, July 2024
It can complement Low-E coatings and multiple panes
The amount of improvement depends on the glazing construction and on what is being measured. In the NFRC manual’s example, an uncoated double-pane unit filled with 90% argon and 10% air has a little more than 5% better center-of-glass insulating value than the same unit filled with air. The manual also reports 15–20% reductions for glazing performance when gas fill is combined with Low-E coatings and multiple panes. These are figures for the stated glazing configurations, not promises of the same improvement in whole-window performance, household energy bills or payback.
It is a common, established option
Argon is widely used, but market figures need context. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 Draft 1 Criteria Analysis Report found argon in 51% of the double-pane options and 55% of the triple-pane options it analyzed under its proposed Northern Climate Zone criteria. Those shares describe the report’s analyzed options; they are not a universal market share or a count of current products. EPA / ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 Draft 1 Criteria Analysis Report

What argon does not tell you about a window
A gas-fill label is only one detail of the glazing assembly. NFRC explains that a window’s whole-product U-factor reflects the glazing, edge effects, frame and sash. The spacer system at the edge of the glass helps maintain a gas-tight seal and control moisture; NFRC’s manual also discusses limitations of single-seal systems for containing special gas fills. Do not assume a fill is retained indefinitely or can be easily replenished: check the manufacturer’s product documentation and warranty for the specific unit. NFRC Simulation Manual, July 2024
ENERGY STAR qualification is based on rated performance criteria, not a requirement to use argon or any other single technology. A product may meet the criteria through its overall design. ENERGY STAR: What makes it ENERGY STAR?

Nor is there a supported, argon-specific household bill-savings figure. ENERGY STAR reports average nationwide heating and cooling bill savings of up to 13% for ENERGY STAR certified windows, doors and skylights compared with non-certified products. That comparison covers certified products, not argon-filled windows versus otherwise identical air-filled windows. ENERGY STAR residential window guidance
How to compare double-glazed window options
Compare the complete rated product, not just the gas fill. NFRC explains, “U-Factor measures how well a product keeps heat from escaping a room. The lower the number, the better it is at keeping heat in.” NFRC window-rating guidance

- Product Composition: This unit features double glazed acrylic construction with integrated blinds and an insect screen.
- Application Scope: Designed specifically as a replacement window for RV, camper, and caravan vehicles.
- Functional Design: Restores equipment function by providing glazing, light control, and insect protection.
- Specification Match: Matches the stated configuration of double glazing, acrylic material, and included screen.
- Installation Purpose: Serves as a direct functional substitute to restore the vehicle's window assembly.
- Whole-window U-factor: A lower value means better resistance to heat escaping, all else equal. Use the rated whole-window value rather than a center-of-glass figure when comparing products.
- Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC): This measures solar heat admitted through the window. The useful balance between insulation and solar gain depends on location and goals; check ENERGY STAR criteria for your climate zone.
- Other NFRC ratings: Review visible transmittance for daylight, condensation resistance, and air leakage as separate performance measures. ENERGY STAR residential window guidance NFRC window-rating guidance
- Construction details: Ask which Low-E coating, pane configuration, spacer, frame and gas fill are included in the quoted model. A gas-fill statement alone cannot replace the product ratings.
- Installed price and workmanship: Compare quotes for the same model and specification, and confirm what installation includes. ENERGY STAR notes that installation quality affects performance. ENERGY STAR residential window guidance
A practical checklist before ordering
- Find the home’s ENERGY STAR climate zone and use the ENERGY STAR Product Finder and residential window guidance to identify qualifying product lines.
- Ask for the exact window model and its NFRC ratings, especially whole-window U-factor and SHGC.
- Compare the ratings of complete products rather than relying on an argon claim or center-of-glass number.
- Confirm the panes, Low-E coating, spacer, frame and gas fill specified for the quoted model.
- Get multiple installed-price quotes and check how installation is covered.
- Keep the ENERGY STAR and NFRC labels and the product documentation for the window you order.
When another gas may be discussed
Krypton is more costly than argon and suits a narrower, optimized glazing cavity; it can be useful where a thinner gap is needed. It is not automatically a better choice. Relate any alternative gas to the actual glazing design and the price quoted for that window. EPA / ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 Draft 1 Criteria Analysis Report NFRC Simulation Manual, July 2024
