Golden pothos brings trailing or climbing greenery, spider plants add arching leaves and dangling plantlets, and peace lilies pair glossy leaves with white blooms. If the spot is dim or its temperature fluctuates, a snake plant is another option.
Choose for the room, not the whole house
A room’s light, humidity and temperature matter more than calling the entire home “bright” or “low light.” Window direction and size affect the light a plant receives, while bathrooms and kitchens are often more humid than heated living rooms. The RHS Advice Team puts the principle plainly: “So the main priority is to select houseplants to suit your location, to ensure they will thrive and look their best without too many problems or excessive maintenance.” Read the RHS houseplant selection guide.
Before choosing, consider the actual spot’s light, how much space the plant’s mature shape will occupy, and whether you can meet its watering and humidity needs. A hanging position suits a trailing plant; a floor or table display may better suit an upright one.
Three evergreen houseplants for different displays
Golden pothos: trailing or climbing foliage
Golden pothos, also called devil’s ivy (Epipremnum), has glossy, heart-shaped evergreen leaves. Depending on the cultivar, leaves may be green with white or yellow markings. Its stems can trail from a hanging pot or climb with support, making it useful where a vertical display suits the room.

It prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some shade, though growth slows; avoid deep shade, direct summer sun and cold draughts. Let the top 2 cm (about 1 inch) of compost dry between waterings, and avoid overwatering. See the RHS growing guide for Epipremnum.
Safety: The RHS says pothos is harmful if eaten and can irritate skin and eyes. Keep it away from children and pets, and take care when handling it.

Spider plant: arching leaves and hanging plantlets
Spider plants (Chlorophytum) have narrow, arching foliage and cascading stems that can bear small flowers and plantlets. They prefer indirect or dappled light but tolerate low light; protect them from strong direct summer sun. The plantlets offer a straightforward way to propagate new plants and expand a collection.

Peace lily: glossy foliage and white blooms
Peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii) combines glossy, dark-green evergreen leaves with white flowering spathes. It suits partial shade, but deep shade can reduce flowering. During growth, the RHS recommends watering and misting freely and maintaining high humidity. Use peat-free compost.

Snake plant for low light or fluctuating temperatures
Snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) is listed by the RHS among plants to consider for low light and fluctuating temperatures. It may suit a location that is less stable than the one you would choose for pothos or a peace lily. The cited RHS guidance does not establish whether it is safe around pets, so check a reliable source before placing it where children or animals may reach it. A grow light when daylight is insufficient
If a room does not provide enough natural light, a horticultural grow light is an optional aid, not a universal requirement. The RHS identifies LED horticultural lighting as a viable indoor option and notes that light needs differ by plant.
