There is no single best residential solar system: the right configuration depends on your home, roof, electricity use, utility tariff, local rules, financing, and whether you need power during outages. For most homeowners connected to the grid, the practical choice is between two grid-tied inverter designs, with or without a battery; solar roofing and off-grid systems suit more specific circumstances. The five options below are configurations to compare, not a ranking of brands or products.

Compare the five residential solar configurations

Configuration How it works Most relevant when Key question to resolve
Grid-tied with string inverter Panels send direct-current (DC) electricity to a central inverter, which converts it to alternating current (AC). You want a conventional grid-connected design and a clear plan for inverter service over time. What are the inverter warranty, replacement responsibility, and expected replacement cost?
Grid-tied with microinverters A small inverter at each panel converts that panel’s output to AC. You are comparing panel-level conversion with a central inverter and want to review the specific design and monitoring offered. What do the proposal’s shade assumptions, equipment warranties, and monitoring actually cover?
Hybrid solar plus storage Solar panels work with a battery so stored electricity can be used later, subject to the system design. Outage backup or using some generated electricity later is important to you. Which circuits are backed up, for how long under the stated assumptions, and at what cost?
Solar shingles or solar roofing Electricity-generating roofing material is integrated into the roof rather than installed as conventional panels above it. You are planning roof work and want to compare an integrated roof product with a separate panel array. How do roof timing, product warranties, and installed costs compare for your project?
Off-grid system The home’s electrical system is designed not to rely on the utility grid. A property lacks practical grid access or has a specific reason to operate independently. Can a site-specific design reliably serve the household’s loads through changing conditions?

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) puts the underlying choice plainly: “While there is not a universal solar energy solution, in this guide you will find some resources that can help you decide what’s best for you.” Its Homeowner’s Guide to Solar is a useful starting point for a property-specific decision.

Is solar a good fit for your home?

Start with the condition of the roof, the home’s electricity use, and the rules that govern how the system connects to the grid. Solar is a construction project as well as an energy purchase: roof work, electrical design, permits, inspections, and utility interconnection all affect scope and schedule.

  • Roof condition: DOE notes that a roof can be unsuitable because it is too old or has too much tree cover. If reroofing is likely, resolve that work before committing to an array so you do not have to remove and reinstall equipment prematurely. Ask the installer to document the roof’s condition and any structural or attachment assumptions.
  • Usage and rates: Gather household electricity use in kilowatt-hours (kWh), your current utility rates, and the tariff that would apply after interconnection. ENERGY STAR’s Rooftop Solar guidance recommends understanding electricity use, rates, HOA or local rules, and how excess electricity is valued.
  • Local approvals: Confirm HOA restrictions where applicable, local permitting and inspection requirements, and the utility’s interconnection process. Have the proposal identify who handles each step and whether any schedule assumptions depend on approvals.
  • Roofing integration: If comparing solar shingles with conventional panels, check whether the roof needs replacement anyway. The IRS distinguishes solar roofing tiles and shingles that generate clean energy from traditional roofing materials whose primary function is structural or roofing.

How much solar energy should you try to generate?

Do not select a system size from a generic rule of thumb alone. A useful proposal relates estimated annual production to your household’s usage and the value of electricity under your actual utility tariff. If the utility pays less for exported electricity than it charges for electricity you buy, a system that produces more than you can use may have a different financial outcome than one sized around your usage profile.

Ask each bidder to state the proposed system’s DC capacity, expected annual production, and assumptions about roof orientation and shade. Compare those estimates against your bills and the tariff—not against a sales claim that assumes every kilowatt-hour has the same value. NREL’s PVWatts can estimate production using project information you enter; it is an estimate, not a substitute for a site-specific proposal or utility-rate review.

What distinguishes the inverter options?

String inverter: plan for a central replacement item

A string inverter handles conversion for the connected array centrally. DOE’s 2023 consumer guide gives a typical string-inverter lifespan of 10–15 years and says it may need replacement during the solar panels’ lifetime. That is a guide range, not a guarantee for a particular product. Ask for the model, warranty term, who pays for replacement labor, and the estimated replacement cost.

Microinverters: compare the actual design, not a blanket performance promise

With microinverters, conversion happens at each panel. DOE says microinverters tend to have lifetimes similar to panels. The sources do not establish a universal production advantage or price premium for microinverters, so compare the specific proposal’s equipment, warranty, monitoring, and shade assumptions rather than assuming this architecture will always produce more or cost less.

Neither inverter choice by itself establishes that a system will power the home during a blackout. Backup depends on equipment, controls, storage, and installation design; ask the installer to identify the circuits that remain energized and how the system behaves when the grid is down.

Do you need a battery for backup or later use?

A battery is an option, not an automatic requirement for solar. It may matter if your goal is outage backup or using some of your solar generation later, but its value depends on local electricity rates, export compensation, the loads you want to support, and the electrical design. The reviewed official guidance does not establish that a battery saves money for every home.

Request the battery’s usable capacity, the backed-up circuits, the expected backup duration and the conditions behind that estimate. Ask whether the system can recharge during an outage, what equipment is required to isolate the home from the grid, and whether the battery is compatible with the proposed inverter and existing electrical service. A broad claim such as “whole-home backup” is not a substitute for a circuit-level design and stated assumptions.

Should you buy, lease, or use a power-purchase agreement?

Compare ownership, total payments, service duties, and what happens when you sell the property—not just the first payment or advertised savings. ENERGY STAR’s rooftop solar guidance discusses comparing provider terms and transparent savings assumptions.

  • Purchased system: You own the equipment and are generally responsible for maintenance. Review warranties and identify who to contact for service.
  • Leased system: The provider owns the system and is responsible for maintenance under the arrangement. Read the contract’s payment, service, and property-transfer provisions.
  • Power-purchase agreement (PPA): Review the payment formula and contract term, and determine how the provider’s equipment and agreement affect a future sale. Compare the total contractual cost with other offers using consistent assumptions.

For any third-party-owned arrangement, ask what a buyer must do if you sell: assume the agreement, obtain provider approval, or arrange another transfer or payoff. The exact obligations are contract-specific.

What happens to extra electricity you send to the grid?

The answer depends on your utility and location. Find out whether exports receive a credit, what rate or formula determines that credit, whether it changes by time of day, and whether credits expire or carry forward. Do not assume the utility will compensate exported electricity at the same rate you pay to buy power. Have every installer use the same current tariff and explain how it affects the production and savings estimate.

What should comparable solar proposals include?

Ask each installer to quote the same scope and disclose the assumptions behind the numbers. A side-by-side comparison is only useful when system size, expected production, payment terms, and export-credit assumptions are made explicit.

  • Proposed configuration, DC capacity, expected annual production, and shade and orientation assumptions.
  • Total installed price, payment schedule, and complete cash, loan, lease, or PPA terms.
  • The current utility tariff used in the savings estimate and how it treats excess electricity.
  • Panel, inverter, battery, workmanship, and roof warranties, including who is responsible for service.
  • Whether storage is included; backed-up loads; and the assumptions used for any outage-duration estimate.
  • Responsibility for permits, utility interconnection, inspections, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • Installer licensing, insurance, relevant credentials, project schedule, and post-installation support.
  • Contract transfer or payoff terms if you sell the property.

Check the installer’s licensing and insurance for your location, read the full contract, and ask what is excluded from the price. Compare savings forecasts only after checking their production, tariff, financing, and export assumptions.

What federal tax credit applies to a new installation in 2026?

For U.S. homeowners, the IRS says the residential clean energy credit under section 25D is not allowed for expenditures made after December 31, 2025. Under the IRS FAQ, an expenditure is treated as made when the original installation is completed; paying before that date does not make an installation completed later eligible. The current rule is described in the IRS’s FAQ on modifications under Public Law 119-21. Do not count the former federal residential credit as an incentive for a new 2026 installation. State, local, and utility programs are separate and must be checked for your location and project.

How long do solar panels last?

DOE’s 2023 guide gives a typical residential solar-panel lifespan of 20–25 years; ENERGY STAR describes panels as usually lasting 20 years. These are approximate lifespan statements, not guarantees of a specific output or warranty duration. Review the panel’s product and performance warranties, and distinguish those from the workmanship and roof warranties in the installation contract.

How to choose the right system for your project

  1. Confirm roof condition, shade, household usage, local rules, and the applicable utility tariff.
  2. Decide whether your priority is grid-connected production, outage backup, roof integration, or independence from the grid.
  3. Obtain comparable proposals that specify equipment, expected output, all-in cost, service responsibilities, and contract terms.
  4. Check the assumptions behind savings claims and have a qualified installer explain the system’s electrical design and approvals.
  5. Choose the configuration whose documented design and obligations fit the property and your goals—not the one with the broadest savings or backup promise.
