If you want a single cup without disposable pods, first decide whether you want a machine to grind and brew whole beans or a manual dripper that uses loose grounds and hot water. The Cuisinart Custom Grind and Brew is the automatic grind-and-brew choice named by Bon Appétit; the other four picks below are manual pour-over brewers. They are useful alternatives, not directly comparable machines, and the ratings and recommendations are attributed to the publications that evaluated them.
How to choose a pod-free single-cup brewer
“Pod-free” describes two different routines. An automatic grind-and-brew machine takes whole beans and handles the brewing cycle. A pour-over dripper takes ground coffee; you supply hot water, usually from a kettle, and control at least part of the pour. The OXO’s reservoir meters water delivery, but it does not grind beans.
Before choosing, consider whether you already have a kettle or grinder, how much control you want over extraction, whether you prefer a reusable or paper filter, and how easily the brewer fits your mug and can be cleaned. Filter availability matters too: these brewers do not all use the same format.
Five pod-free picks, by use case
1. Cuisinart Custom Grind and Brew — best for an automated bean-to-cup routine
Bon Appétit’s April 2026 roundup names the Cuisinart Custom Grind and Brew its best pod-free single-serve coffee maker. It suits someone who wants beans ground and brewed without loading a disposable capsule. Bon Appétit also says its reservoir needs less frequent refilling than the Ratio Four, a larger drip brewer that can be programmed for one cup.

2. OXO Brew Single Serve Pour-Over — best for a guided manual pour
Talk of the House’s October 2026 one-cup guide recommends the OXO overall. Its 360 ml (12 oz) tank meters water delivery, reducing the need to manage a continuous kettle pour. It includes a reusable #2 cone filter, and the guide describes its parts as dishwasher-safe.

3. Melitta Single-Cup Pour-Over Cone — best for a straightforward, low-complexity setup
Talk of the House names the Melitta single-cup cone its value pick. It sits directly on a mug and uses standard #2 paper filters, which are a recurring consumable. It is a simple fit for someone who already has a kettle and wants a basic cone rather than a brewer with a water reservoir.

4. Kalita Wave 185 — best manual option for a forgiving pour
Tom’s Guide’s June 2026 guide identifies the Kalita Wave 185 as its beginner pick, describing it as less dependent on pouring technique than the Hario V60. It uses the Wave 185 filter format, so check that those filters are available to you before settling on this dripper.
In a separate comparison, Better Coffee Lab scored the Kalita Wave 185 9.2/10, the highest score among the drippers it compared. That is the publication’s own score, not a standardized rating or a guarantee that every coffee and recipe will taste best in this brewer.

5. Hario V60 Plastic — best for hands-on control
The plastic V60 is a manual cone for people willing to pay attention to grind and pouring in exchange for control over flow and extraction. Better Coffee Lab scored it 8.7/10 in its 2026 comparison, ranking it second among the drippers it assessed. The same comparison says the V60 is less forgiving for beginners than several alternatives.
Specify the V60 size and matching filter format when shopping; “Hario V60” covers multiple sizes, and this recommendation is for the plastic dripper. Choose it for the hands-on routine, not for automation.

What the published scores do—and do not—show
Better Coffee Lab’s 2026 comparison reports these scores for five pour-over drippers. They are useful as one publication’s results under its chosen method, not as a universal ranking of all pod-free single-serve coffee makers.
| Dripper | Better Coffee Lab score (2026) |
|---|---|
| Kalita Wave 185 | 9.2/10 |
| Hario V60 Plastic | 8.7/10 |
| Chemex Classic | 8.5/10 |
| Melitta Pour Over | 8.0/10 |
| Hario Switch | 7.8/10 |
For that comparison, Better Coffee Lab says it used one medium-roast Colombian coffee, a Baratza Encore at setting 16, water at 196°F, a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio, and a three-pour method. It brewed each dripper five times and used a blind tasting with four people. The publication cautions that results reflect that recipe and are not universal. Its Melitta score should not be assumed to apply to every Melitta model or recipe.
A practical starting recipe for one cup
Talk of the House suggests 15 g of coffee to 250 g of water, approximately a 1:16 ratio, as a starting point for a single cup. Its guide recommends blooming the grounds with 45 g of water for 30–40 seconds, then pouring in two stages. It gives a total brew-time target of 1:45–2:30. Treat those figures as that guide’s starting instructions, not a guaranteed result: coffee, grind, dripper, and pouring technique all affect the cup.
- Measure 15 g of ground coffee and 250 g of hot water.
- Wet the grounds with 45 g of water and wait 30–40 seconds for the bloom.
- Pour the remaining water in two stages, aiming for a total brew time of 1:45–2:30.
Which one fits your routine?
- Choose the Cuisinart if you want an automatic machine that grinds whole beans; verify the model and serving capacity first.
- Choose the OXO if you want a manual cup with a metered water reservoir and reusable filter.
- Choose the Melitta if you want a basic cone on a mug and are comfortable buying standard #2 paper filters.
- Choose the Kalita Wave 185 if you want a manual dripper that Tom’s Guide considers less technique-sensitive than the V60, and can source its specific filters.
- Choose the Hario V60 Plastic if hands-on control matters more than an easy, forgiving pour.
Good Housekeeping reports testing 32 single-serve machines in the year before its April 2026 article, but its highlighted selections primarily include capsule brewers and a pods-and-grounds option. That is category context, not evidence that the five pod-free choices above were tested head-to-head. The list combines an automatic machine recommendation with manual-dripper picks from separate publications.
