There is no evidence-based, continent-wide ranking of five bug sprays for Africa. The safest way to choose is to compare products by active ingredient, concentration, labeled protection time, target insects, age directions and availability where you are going. CDC recognizes DEET, picaridin (also called icaridin), IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD) and 2-undecanone as repellent ingredients; the product label—not a generic ranking—determines how a particular formulation should be used.
How to read a “top five” list for Africa
Africa includes many countries, climates and travel settings, so a recommendation for one destination should not be treated as a rule for the whole continent. CDC public-health guidance identifies effective repellent ingredients, but it does not establish five tested product winners or a universal best spray. Product availability, registration and label directions can also differ by market.
Use the five ingredients below as a shortlist for comparing eligible products—not as a ranked list. Before buying, check the exact product label and confirm it is approved or registered for sale where you will use it.
Five repellent ingredients to compare
1. DEET
CDC identifies DEET as an effective repellent. For travelers to Nigeria, CDC advises using a product with at least 20% DEET for protection lasting up to several hours against ticks and mosquitoes. 2. Picaridin (icaridin)
CDC lists picaridin as an option; outside the United States it is commonly called icaridin. Compare the product’s stated concentration, protection time, target insects and use directions rather than assuming every formulation performs alike. Availability and local labeling may vary. 4. Formulated OLE or PMD
CDC includes formulated OLE/PMD products in its repellent guidance, but pure, unformulated oil of lemon eucalyptus has not undergone the same validated testing and should not be treated as equivalent. 5. 2-undecanone

What to check on the product label
Compare actual products using the information their labels provide. A higher percentage of active ingredient generally means longer protection, but it does not make every product interchangeable or remove the need to follow directions. - Active ingredient and percentage: Record the exact ingredient and concentration.
- Protection time and target insects: Use the product’s own stated claims; do not infer duration from another brand or formulation.
- Age restrictions: Check whether the label permits use for each traveler, especially children.
- Application directions: Follow the label for exposed skin, reapplication and any other product-specific precautions.
- Destination-market status: Confirm local approval or registration and that the product is available where you plan to buy it.
Use repellent safely, especially on children
Follow the product label and CDC’s application guidance. Apply sunscreen first and repellent afterward; do not apply repellent under clothing. For a child’s face, an adult should put repellent on their own hands first and then apply it. Do not put repellent on a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts or irritated skin. Layer protection with clothing and sleeping arrangements
Repellent is one part of bite prevention. CDC recommends loose-fitting long sleeves, pants and socks, and treating clothing and gear—such as boots, pants, socks and tents—with 0.5% permethrin, or buying pretreated gear.
