The best apartment water filter depends on the contaminant you want to reduce, how much water you use, and whether you can connect to a faucet or under-sink plumbing. The available evidence supports four named candidates—not five independently verified winners—so this guide compares those four and explains what to verify before choosing a fifth.
How to choose a water filter for an apartment
Start with the reason you want a filter: taste or odor, a specific contaminant, concern about older plumbing, or a general preference. If you have a specific health concern, check local water information or arrange appropriate testing, then match the result to the exact product’s certified reduction claim. A filter type or a high stage count alone does not establish that it reduces a particular contaminant.
NSF provides listings by pollutant and system category; check the listing for the exact product and the claim you care about at NSF’s drinking water treatment unit listings. Certification for one reduction claim does not mean a product is certified for every contaminant.
- Installation: Pitchers and batch countertop systems avoid plumbing connections. Faucet-mount filters attach to the tap; under-sink systems connect to plumbing. Check your lease and building rules before making any connection, and confirm faucet fit or access to cold-water shutoffs as applicable.
- Capacity: Pitchers require manual filling. EPA says under-sink systems can treat larger quantities. Compare batch size, flow, and storage with the amount you use for drinking and cooking.
- Ongoing cost: Check cartridge compatibility, replacement intervals, availability, and current prices. Only the FreshPoint interval below is manufacturer-estimated in the evidence available here.
- Reverse osmosis: Compare complete-system certification and efficiency information, not just the words “RO” or a standard number. EPA’s WaterSense specification covers point-of-use RO systems and requires NSF/ANSI 58 certification and an automatic shutoff for systems within its scope.
Four apartment-friendly candidates
These are category-based candidates, not a ranking from hands-on testing. The first three were identified in a secondary comparison; verify their current exact-model claims with the certifier and manufacturer before relying on them.

Pentair FreshPoint Easy Flow: under-sink option
Pentair says installation requires no drilling or special tools, but the system connects to a cold-water line and may need an adapter depending on the existing lines. The manufacturer says it does not reduce chloramines. Its listed reductions include chlorine taste and odor, lead, and cysts. Pentair’s product page publishes these figures; the year is not stated there, and they are manufacturer claims, not independent measurements:

- COUNTERTOP FILTRATION + PREMIUM-QUALITY CARAFE: No plumbing or installation is required for this RO system. Simply plug this portable piece of tech into any power source, and you're ready to fill it up and go! Better yet, the water container is constructed of a high borosilicate glass carafe instead of the traditional plastic, reducing the risk of secondary pollution and making this one of the best countertop water filter systems.
- POWER SAVING + WATER SAVING: The water system automatically enters a power-saving standby mode when not in use to reduce power consumption. Filters are also designed to help save water with an impressive 2:1 Pure to Drain ratio. Leftover water from a cycle isn't deemed wastewater, so more water is saved for various household purposes.
- 5-STAGE ADVANCED RO FILTRATION: Five levels of filtration, including a remineralization filter, are utilized to ensure the purest water possible. 99.9% of all possible contaminants are filtered out, and the water is enriched with essential minerals, balancing taste and health benefits so you can confidently drink your own tap water.
- FILTER LIFE MONITOR: The countertop water filters last between 12-24 months, providing 1-2 years of clean drinking water before needing replacement. The monitor display shows the service life of filters and water quality so you can easily keep track of filter replacement and periodically switch out filter tubes.
- SUSTAINABLE HYDRATION: 1-year limited manufacturer warranty included upon registration. Designed with premium quality components for years of reliable use, our RO system delivers bottled-quality water at home, reducing plastic waste and supporting sustainability efforts with ClimatePartner Certification.
What point-of-use treatment covers
EPA describes point-of-use treatment as equipment at or near the tap for drinking and cooking water. It includes pitchers, faucet-mounted filters, countertop or stand-alone systems, and under-sink systems. This shortlist is for drinking and cooking water, not treatment of water throughout an apartment building.
Whole-house treatment is a point-of-entry approach for water entering a building. EPA says these systems generally cost several thousand dollars and may require plumbing alterations and professional maintenance—usually a different scope from an apartment drinking-water filter. See EPA’s overview of home filtration systems.

Reverse osmosis: questions to check
EPA’s WaterSense specification applies to point-of-use RO systems for drinking and cooking water, including plumbed, faucet-mounted, and batch systems. Within its scope, the specification requires NSF/ANSI 58 certification and an automatic shutoff device. Use it to frame questions about complete-system certification and water efficiency; the standard number alone is not proof of every possible contaminant reduction. See EPA’s point-of-use reverse-osmosis specification.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the problem you want to address. For a specific contaminant concern, consult local water information or appropriate testing rather than relying on taste or a generic meter reading.
- Find the exact product and cartridge in the certifier’s listing, and confirm the listed reduction matches your concern.
- Confirm the installation fits your apartment: lease and building rules, faucet compatibility, or access to the cold-water shutoff and supply line.
- Compare capacity and replacement schedule. Calculate annual cartridge cost using current prices; the FreshPoint’s 12-month life is a Pentair estimate, not a universal replacement interval.
- If considering RO, check complete-system certification and efficiency disclosures alongside the contaminant claims.
