It can trim a door jamb, make a plunge cut for an opening, scrape adhesive, remove grout, or sand a corner with an accessory chosen for the job. The right choice depends on the work you expect to do, your power-tool battery platform, and whether the tool’s mount accepts the accessories you need.
What an oscillating multi-tool does
The motor moves its mounted accessory through a small side-to-side arc thousands of times per minute. With the right attachment, one tool can cut, scrape, remove grout, or sand. Its compact body and adjustable blade orientation help when access is restricted or a cut needs to finish close to an adjacent surface. Tom Silva, a general contractor quoted by This Old House, sums up one practical benefit: “One tool means less in the way.”
That versatility does not make it the fastest choice for every job. A dedicated saw is generally better suited to long or broad cuts, while a dedicated sander or grinder can be more efficient over a large area. The oscillating tool earns its place when access, control, or a flush finish matters more than production speed.
Common jobs
- Trim door jambs or baseboards flush with flooring.
- Make plunge cuts or cut openings in drywall.
- Remove grout or adhesive with an appropriate blade.
- Scrape paint, caulk, or other material with a scraper attachment.
- Sand corners and other small areas with detail-sanding pads.
What to compare before buying
Corded or cordless
A corded model offers continuous operation without battery changes and may cost less. A cordless model is easier to move around a site or home. If you already own compatible batteries and a charger, a bare tool may be a sensible option; check exactly what a kit includes before comparing prices. Voltage labels alone do not establish which tool will perform better.

Bosch’s current U.S. catalog, for example, includes corded, 12V Max, and 18V oscillating tools. The best power source depends on where you work and what battery platform you already use, rather than a voltage number considered in isolation. See Bosch’s product catalog.
Accessory mount and compatibility
The mount determines which blades and other accessories fit. Bosch lists Starlock, StarlockPlus, and StarlockMax systems; its compatibility guidance says standard Starlock accessories fit higher tiers, while Plus and Max accessories have narrower compatibility. Other tools use OIS-style interfaces or different clamping arrangements. Do not assume a blade is universal: verify the exact tool-and-accessory pairing in the manufacturer’s manual and product listing before buying. Mount compatibility can affect both the accessories you can use and the cost of maintaining the tool.

Blade changes, speed, and control
Tool-free blade changes are useful if you switch often between cutting, scraping, and sanding. Variable speed helps adapt operation to the material and task. Look at how the controls fall under your hand in the grip you expect to use; a control that is easy to reach and adjust can matter more in repeated detail work than a headline specification.
Cutting behavior, vibration, and comfort
A larger oscillation angle can make cutting more aggressive, but may also affect vibration and noise. Angle and oscillations per minute (OPM) are not reliable stand-alone rankings: results depend on the blade, material, tool, and test method. Consider comfort and vibration along with cutting results, especially if you expect to use the tool for extended periods.

In a February 2025 explainer, Pro Tool Reviews reported cutting-noise readings of 92–104 dB(A) in its comparison. Those are that outlet’s test results, not guaranteed levels for every tool. Wear hearing protection appropriate to the job and follow the tool manual.
Accessory range and ongoing cost
Check that suitable accessories are readily available for your intended materials: wood, metal, bi-metal, carbide or diamond grout-removal blades, scrapers, and detail-sanding pads. Choose an accessory rated for the material and task, and confirm that its mount fits the tool. The tool’s purchase price is only part of the decision if the accessories you need are scarce, costly, or incompatible.

What recent head-to-head testing found
In its Best Oscillating Multi-Tool Head-to-Head Review 2026, published February 11, 2026, Pro Tool Reviews named the Ridgid 18V Brushless R86242 the top scorer in its comparison group with 96 points, followed by the Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2836 at 92 and the Flex 24V Brushless FX4111 at 90. The publication’s scoring explanation says those scores compare the tools in that group and under its tests; they are not universal rankings.
| Model | Score in Pro Tool Reviews’ 2026 comparison | Details reported by the outlet |
|---|---|---|
| Ridgid 18V Brushless R86242 | 96 points; top scorer in the tested group | 4° oscillating angle, 10,000–20,000 OPM, OIS interface, and 2.4 lb bare weight |
| Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2836 | 92 points; runner-up in the tested group | Not stated here |
| Flex 24V Brushless FX4111 | 90 points; third in the tested group | Not stated here |
These scores and specifications are Pro Tool Reviews’ published results, not independent recommendations or hands-on results from this article. The outlet describes using a testing rig intended to reduce human error and make results repeatable. Its group scores and reported test results do not establish long-term durability, current street prices, or which tool will suit every user. Treat the three models as examples to investigate, and check current listings for price, availability, kit contents, and compatible accessories.

Use the tool safely
The Power Tool Institute’s Multi-Tools & Oscillating Tools guidance says, “When used according to the manufacturer’s instructions, the proper tool and accessory will make the job safer and faster.” For each task:
Quick Recap
- Read the manual for the particular tool and accessory, and use an accessory suited to the material.
- Inspect accessories for damage and secure the workpiece before cutting, scraping, or sanding.
- Keep hands clear of moving parts and check for hidden utilities before cutting into a wall, floor, or other concealed area.
- Choose respiratory protection for the material and task.
- Do not use dust extraction when sanding metal: sparks and hot particles can ignite dust or debris.
How to choose for your work
- Start with the jobs. If you mainly need flush cuts, plunge cuts, access in tight spaces, or detail work, an oscillating multi-tool may be a useful addition. For long cuts or large sanding and grinding jobs, compare a dedicated tool suited to that work.
- Choose a power source. Favor corded operation if uninterrupted runtime matters more than mobility; consider cordless if you work away from outlets or already own a compatible battery platform.
- Confirm the mount. Identify the tool’s exact interface and check that the blades and accessories for your planned tasks fit it.
- Compare control and handling. Look for speed adjustment and a blade-change system that suit how often you switch tasks, then assess the control layout and comfort for your intended grip.
- Check the complete purchase. Compare what is included in each kit, the accessories you will need, and their compatibility. Do not treat a bare-tool price as the cost of a complete setup unless you already own its battery and charger.
- Use comparative reviews in context. Check the publication’s tested group and method, and treat its scores as results for those tests rather than a guarantee of performance in your work.
