The DYMO metal embossing tapewriter that most people searching this phrase mean is the Rhino M1011, a manually operated embosser that DYMO sells for marking durable industrial items with aluminum or stainless-steel tape. The M1011 is model-specific: DYMO’s official product pages list its non-adhesive aluminum and non-adhesive stainless-steel tapes as compatible with the Rhino M1011 Embosser Kit only, so the tape you buy has to match the machine.
Which machine this review covers
The title does not name a model number, and DYMO has made many embossers over the decades. This review treats the Rhino M1011 as the product the title refers to, because DYMO’s official materials describe it as a metal tape embosser and publish metal-tape compatibility information for it. Vintage DYMO tapewriters are a different matter, and they are covered in their own section below.
This is a review based on manufacturer materials: DYMO’s official Europe user guide and industrial catalog, and its official product pages for the aluminum and stainless-steel embossing tapes. It is not based on hands-on testing, so it does not judge how comfortable the tool is to squeeze, how fast a label takes to produce, or how long the machine lasts.
What the M1011 includes
DYMO’s industrial catalog describes the kit and its functions. Based on that catalog, the M1011 offers the following:
#1 Best Overall
- S0720090
- Metal tape support: it embosses aluminum and stainless-steel metal labels.
- Built-in hole punch: for putting a hole in a finished label so it can be hung.
- Cable-tie slot punch: for a slot that lets a label be attached with a cable tie.
- Measuring gauge: for sizing a label before you emboss it.
- Cutting handle: for cutting the tape to length after embossing.
- Character wheels in the kit: a horizontal character wheel and a reverse-image wheel are listed as included.
The catalog’s feature list is the basis for these descriptions. It does not give dimensions, weight, or character-set details, so those points are not stated here.
Tape compatibility
The compatibility question is where most buying mistakes happen. DYMO’s official product pages for the two metal tapes name the Rhino M1011 Embosser Kit as the only compatible machine among the models they cover. Use the table below as a checklist before you order.
Rank #2
- This durable labeler embosses stainless steel and aluminum labels that resist corrosion from extreme weather, temperature, chemical, or UV exposure; Uses 1/2-inch metal labels
- Built-in hole-punch for creating hanging labels, cable-tie slot punch, and measuring gauge to set leading and trailing label edge length
- Easy-to-use cutting handle cuts square or rounded edges
- Rugged cast aluminum frame withstands tough working conditions
- Kit includes embosser, character wheel, reverse-image character wheel, 1/2-inch non-adhesive aluminum and stainless steel labels, and hard carry case
| Tape type | Adhesive | Compatible embosser (per DYMO) | Official use cited by DYMO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminum embossing tape | Non-adhesive | Rhino M1011 Embosser Kit only | Industrial marking, such as pipelines, underground cables, engine parts and building materials |
| Stainless-steel embossing tape | Non-adhesive | Rhino M1011 Embosser Kit only | Industrial marking, such as pipelines, underground cables, engine parts and building materials |
| Tape widths and thicknesses | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
The official pages establish two metals that the M1011 accepts. They do not establish that every DYMO metal tape fits every DYMO embosser, and they do not establish that other DYMO tapes will work in the M1011. Confirm the model number on the box or in the kit before purchase.
The M1011 user guide supports the same point with a plain statement: “The DYMO M1011 is set to emboss non-adhesive aluminium tape.” That sentence from DYMO’s guide is the clearest instruction on which tape the machine is set up for.

Industrial use and durability claims
DYMO markets the metal labels for marking pipelines, underground cables, engine parts, building materials and similar industrial items. The company also states that the tape resists chemicals, weather, high and low temperatures, and abrasion.
These durability statements are DYMO’s own claims. They appear in the company’s product pages and industrial catalog, and no independent test results for them were found in the sources reviewed. If a label must survive a particular chemical, temperature range or outdoor exposure, check that specific condition with the manufacturer or with a test you run yourself before relying on it.

Vintage DYMO embossers and modern tape
Readers with older DYMO machines often ask whether current embossing tape will work with them. The official compatibility answer depends on the model, not the brand. DYMO publishes an official embosser compatibility chart on its Canadian website that lists tape compatibility by embosser. Use that chart to check a model other than the M1011. The sources reviewed for this article cover only the M1011, so they cannot confirm compatibility for any other model.

Based on the official feature set, the M1011 appears to be aimed at people who need to mark metal items in an industrial or site setting and who want a label that can be hung or tied. Before buying, check these points:
Best Value
- INDUSTRIAL-STRENGTH: Adhesive resists moisture, extreme temperatures, UV light, and more, so labels won’t curl or fall off
- BUILT FOR JOB SITES: Available in a range of UL recognized materials for virtually every industrial labeling application; heat-shrink tubes tested to SAE, ASTM, and military specifications
- TEXT STAYS ON: Thermal transfer printing technology – label text won’t smudge, smear, or fade
- EASY APPLICATION: Easy-to-peel split-back design makes applying labels quick and easy
- ALWAYS USE AUTHENTIC DYMO LABELS: For use with DYMO label makers, including DYMO Rhino 4200, 5200, 6000
- Decide whether you need aluminum or stainless steel. Both are listed as M1011-compatible non-adhesive tapes.
- Choose non-adhesive tape. The official compatible products named here are non-adhesive.
- Consider the marking environment and the attachment method. DYMO’s durability claims are for the tape, and the hole punch and cable-tie slot punch are the documented ways to attach a label.
- Confirm the kit is the Rhino M1011 Embosser Kit before ordering tape.
- Check current retailer listings and prices yourself. Pricing and stock were not verified for this article.
Limits of this review
This article is based on DYMO’s official product pages, catalog and user guide. It does not include first-hand use, independent durability testing, or a comparison with other embossers. The manufacturer claims about resistance and durability are reported as DYMO’s claims, not as verified performance.
Readers who want to evaluate the M1011 for a demanding site should treat the official feature set as a starting point and confirm the specific details they need from DYMO directly.
In the reviewed sources, the Rhino M1011 is the DYMO metal embosser that matches the title. Its documented punches, cutter and gauge point to industrial labeling, and its tape compatibility is limited to the two non-adhesive metal tapes DYMO names for it.
The Bottom Line
If you own or are considering a Rhino M1011, buy the aluminum or stainless-steel non-adhesive tape that DYMO names for that kit, and confirm the model before you order. For other DYMO embossers, check DYMO’s official compatibility chart first rather than assuming a tape fits.
