What the Garrett Wade Yankee Push Drill does
Garrett Wade lists this model as SKU 69P01.01. Its product page describes a chrome-plated solid brass body, a steel cover over the mechanism, and eight double-fluted bits stored in the handle. These are manufacturer specifications, not independently verified construction details.
The mechanism turns the bit as you push the handle down, then reverses rotation as the spring returns the handle. Garrett Wade describes the return action as “essentially self-clearing.” Its 2021 catalog explains: “As you push down, the bit rotates clockwise, cutting the hole. When you stop pushing, the handle springs up and the bit rotates in the reverse direction – essentially self-clearing.” Garrett Wade claims a maximum hole depth of 1.5 inches; the sources do not establish that depth through independent testing.

Garrett Wade also lists a full eight-bit replacement set and three-bit replacement packs for four of the smaller sizes. The product page says its full replacement set should fit an old Stanley push drill. That is a specific retailer compatibility claim, not a guarantee that the bits fit every vintage Stanley or Yankee model.
Who should consider this push drill?
The listed sizes and hand-powered action suggest a role in small-hole work where a powered drill is unnecessary or inconvenient. Before buying, compare your project needs with the tool’s published limits:

- Hole depth: Garrett Wade claims holes up to 1.5 inches deep. That is the manufacturer’s stated maximum, not a tested result.
- Operating style: The tool uses a reciprocating push-and-spring-return motion rather than continuous rotation from a powered drill.
- Bit supply: Replacement packs are listed by Garrett Wade, which may matter if a bit is lost or damaged.
Retailer-hosted customer comments include use for pilot holes in copper tacks and furniture or cabinetry work. Those anecdotes illustrate possible applications, but they are not controlled tests or a representative measure of performance. Garrett Wade’s product page displayed a 4.7 rating from 32 reviews when accessed; ratings and review counts can change, and they do not establish measured accuracy or longevity.
It is a drill, not a Yankee screwdriver
The Garrett Wade push drill should not be treated as a screwdriver. In the product-page Q&A, a Garrett Wade product specialist says it cannot drive screws because it rotates clockwise on the downstroke and counterclockwise on release, with no way to change rotation. Phillips and flat-head screwdriver bits therefore do not make it a substitute for the separate Yankee screwdriver shown alongside it in Garrett Wade’s 2021 catalog.

Availability and historical context
Garrett Wade says the classic Yankee push drill was made by Stanley for decades and describes its current version as custom-made. Its 2021 catalog calls the Garrett Wade tool a recreation of an earlier design that had been discontinued by its maker. These are Garrett Wade’s descriptions; the sources here do not independently establish the full manufacturing or ownership history, and the current country of manufacture is not stated in the official specifications reviewed.
Current stock is also unclear: Garrett Wade’s product page showed purchase controls as well as a back-in-stock notice, while its drilling collection listed the tool with a price. Treat availability and any displayed price as unconfirmed snapshots, not a promise of stock or a durable price.
