A screw extractor can remove some stripped or damaged screws, but the right method depends on the extractor design. For the BLACK+DECKER method, check the package for the required pilot-hole size, drill that hole, insert the extractor, then turn it to the left with a wrench.
Before you start: check the screw and extractor
Use an extractor only when its instructions match the damaged screw and the workpiece. Extractor sets are made for stripped screws, and some use left-hand flutes that grip the screw as the tool turns. Bosch Professional describes this design for its screw extractor sets.
- Identify the extractor type and size; do not assume every extractor uses the same hole, drive tool, or turning method.
- Check the maker’s guidance for compatible screw materials, thread types, and any speed limits.
- Consider whether drilling or a slipping tool could damage the surrounding workpiece. The available instructions do not establish one technique that works for every screw or material.
Wear eye protection and work in a stable area. BGS technic warns that extractors can break under overload and advises protection against flying parts; Lawson Products also cautions that cutting tools can break or shatter if used improperly.
Using a BLACK+DECKER-style extractor
BLACK+DECKER’s support instructions call for a pilot hole sized for the particular extractor. The company says, “The size of the pilot hole needed should be listed on the screw extractor package.” Its article, updated September 27, 2022, also lists example extractor numbers and pilot-bit sizes.

- Read the extractor package and select the specified pilot drill bit.
- Drill the pilot hole into the damaged screw, following the extractor maker’s instructions.
- Insert the extractor into the hole.
- Use an open-end or adjustable wrench to turn the extractor to the left. Stop if the tool binds or feels overloaded rather than forcing it.

Other extractor designs use different procedures
Do not mix instructions from different products. Lawson’s two-ended damaged-screw remover, for example, specifies a variable-speed drill in reverse, firm downward pressure, and very low speed for its removal step. Those directions apply to that remover, not to extractors generally. Follow the manual supplied with the exact tool.

Check compatibility before using a specialized bit
Product limits can be narrow. STAR-M says its No. 5050 extractor bit is for non-hardened and stainless-steel screws, specifies a speed below 3,000 rpm, and cautions against use with tapping screws and coarse threads. That speed and those exclusions are specific to No. 5050, not general rules for screw extractors.
BGS technic likewise says its extractors should be used only when the corresponding screw head is broken or damaged, to avoid overloading. Consult the product directions rather than treating a damaged screw as automatically suitable for extraction.

When to stop
- The screw or workpiece does not match the tool’s stated compatibility.
- The extractor binds, slips, or requires force beyond the maker’s instructions.
- The tool appears damaged or the workpiece is moving and cannot be stabilized.
Stopping is preferable to overloading an extractor that may break or causing avoidable damage around the screw.
