Lignum vitae is a name for dense hardwood from trees in the genus Guaiacum, especially Guaiacum officinale and Guaiacum sanctum. The wood has documented mechanical uses, including marine bearings and propeller shafts, but the trade name alone does not identify a particular species or prove the origin of a product. International trade is also subject to CITES controls.
What does “lignum vitae” mean?
“Lignum vitae” is a common and trade name associated with more than one Guaiacum species. The name is particularly linked to G. officinale and G. sanctum, so it should not be treated as a precise botanical identification. Kew recognizes both as accepted species: Kew’s profile of G. officinale and Kew’s profile of G. sanctum.
That distinction matters when identifying timber. Trade sources note that wood may be sold under the general name without a clear species distinction. A label saying “lignum vitae” is therefore not, by itself, evidence of which species a piece came from.
What is lignum vitae wood used for?
Guaiacum timber has been used in mechanical applications where its reported self-lubricating properties are useful. Kew’s CITES and Timber: Second Edition identifies marine bearings and propeller shafts among the uses, as well as pulley sheaves, casters, bowling balls, handles, and sheaths. The Kew/CITES timber guide describes these as trade uses; it does not establish that a particular modern component is made from the wood.

The University of Florida IFAS Extension also records historical uses of G. sanctum wood in bowling balls, propeller shafts, gears, and mallets. These examples show how the timber has been applied, not what material is used in any current product.
What are the differences between G. officinale and G. sanctum?
Both species are associated with the lignum vitae name, but that does not make them interchangeable identifications. Kew records a native range for G. officinale extending from Florida through the Caribbean and Central America to parts of South America. A general trade label does not tell a buyer whether timber is from this species or G. sanctum.

Conservation and trade context can also be species-specific. Kew lists G. officinale in CITES Appendix II. A CITES proposal concerning G. sanctum describes the broad use of “lignum vitae” as a trade term and provides historical listing context. The available references do not support a complete comparison of the two species across all botanical, trade, or conservation characteristics.
What should buyers check before purchasing or shipping it?
The common name is not enough to establish botanical identity, provenance, or the legality of a particular transaction. For timber or a finished product, ask the seller for the information relevant to its origin and trade status.

- Hard and dense wood. Imported from Argentina.
- Ideal for making Tomahawk handles, pool cue sticks, walking canes, knife handles, etc.
- Also useful for many other woodworking projects such as spindle turning, game calls, door knobs, birdhouses, etc.
- Ask for the botanical species, rather than relying only on “lignum vitae.”
- Ask where the wood originated and what documentation supports that origin.
- Check current CITES and national import or export requirements for the specific product and the jurisdictions involved.
- For a mechanical part, verify its material, dimensions, and compatibility with the equipment; the historical use of lignum vitae does not establish that a currently sold bearing or shaft contains it.
CITES Appendix listings are a starting point for checking current international listing information. The rules that apply to an actual shipment may depend on the species, product, origin, destination, and applicable national requirements. A species listing does not establish that any individual sale or shipment is legal.

CITES committee material records historical medicinal use of Guaiacum wood and resin, including traditional claims relating to several conditions. It also notes that systematically gathered information about medicinal uses in Mexico was limited. These records are historical and ethnobotanical context, not evidence that a remedy is safe or clinically effective. They should not be used as treatment advice.
