Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s adobe-style home near Calabasas was described by Architectural Digest in 2011 as a 25,000-square-foot house on a 150-acre parcel. The familiar $42 million figure is not a confirmed sale price or a verified current valuation: in 2013, the Los Angeles Times reported it as a whisper-listing asking price, while the couple said they were not selling. The home’s construction and design are notable for a different reason: a large estate was shaped around hand-worked materials, curved circulation, and a connection to the surrounding land.

Where is Will Smith’s mansion?

The estate is in the Santa Monica Mountains near Calabasas, in an area the Los Angeles Times described as Calabasas-adjacent. The available reports do not establish an exact street address, and there is no need to disclose private location details to understand the project.

The property was assembled from adjacent plots. In its 2011 feature, Architectural Digest described a 150-acre parcel and a main house measuring 25,000 square feet. Those are figures reported for the estate in that feature, not a current survey or updated property record.

Is the mansion really worth $42 million?

There is no confirmed $42 million sale in the cited reporting. The figure originated in a 2013 Los Angeles Times report about a claimed whisper-listing asking price. The article said the couple were not selling; a representative said they were staying put. An asking-price report is not evidence that a transaction occurred or that the amount reflected market value.

Architectural Digest referred to the compound as a $42 million property in a 2021 portfolio article. That later description does not verify a sale, provide a formal appraisal, or establish today’s value. The available coverage does not confirm a current listing, sale record, market valuation, or present-day occupancy.

How the estate was planned and built

The 2011 Architectural Digest account traces the project to the couple’s work with architect Stephen Samuelson. Their collaboration took off in earnest in 1997, after they acquired a ranch near Calabasas and began buying neighboring plots to form the larger parcel.

The setting shaped the construction process. According to the feature, obtaining building permits took four years in an environmentally sensitive landscape with complex regulations. Construction began in 2003. The land was regraded to its natural topography, and portions that had previously been leveled for equestrian use were restored. A man-made lake and views toward Saddle Peak were among the attractions of the site.

Who designed Will and Jada’s home?

It was a collaborative project, not the work of a single designer. Architectural Digest credits Stephen Samuelson and Harry Perez-Daple as architects. Judith Lance designed the interiors after the Smiths consulted Waldo Fernandez.

The house is often described as adobe-style, but its references span several traditions. Samuelson said, “The aesthetic is anchored in history and the various interpretations of adobe in Persian, Moroccan, Spanish, as well as Southwest American cultures.” The result, as presented in the 2011 feature, combines a broad historical vocabulary with highly specific, handmade finishes rather than reproducing one regional style.

What does the house look like inside?

Hand-worked surfaces and reclaimed materials

The two-story house curves around a motor court. Its reported finishes include hand-troweled plaster, ceiling timbers salvaged from old homesteads and barns, hammered wrought-iron banisters, and river stones arranged in spiral and infinity-knot patterns. These materials carry the house’s craft emphasis through both structure and decoration.

Collected architectural pieces and custom details

The interiors include antique carved panels, doors, and architectural fragments collected from the Middle East, Africa, the American Southwest, and Asia. The front door had previously been used at a fort in northern India. Other reported details include a living-room fireplace screen made from copper mesh, hand-hammered bronze, and carnelian; custom brass-wire sconces; and a bronze-and-leather chandelier with hand-strung rock-crystal beads.

In the master suite, small ball chains suspended from bronze links form a canopy. The curved architecture also required furniture to be fitted to the rooms. Lance described the approach simply: “Nothing here came off the shelf.”

Why does a 25,000-square-foot house aim to feel intimate?

The plan was designed to avoid a sequence of oversized rooms and dead-end corridors. Architectural Digest describes curved circulation, nooks, and alcoves that break up the scale and create smaller places within the larger house. Will Smith summarized the circulation idea as, “The idea was no dead ends.”

The couple framed the project as a family retreat rather than a display of size. Pinkett Smith said, “We wanted to create a family retreat, something made by hand and as natural as possible, something that ties back to the land.” She also described the home as a spiritual endeavor for the couple. Will Smith’s stated ambition was to make the labor visible: “Everything needed to be done by hand,” and “We wanted to feel the love and labor that went into every piece of this place.”

What the $42 million figure does—and does not—tell you

The amount is best understood as a reported 2013 asking-price claim that was later repeated in retrospective coverage, not as a verified sale price or present valuation. The home’s documented significance lies in its site planning, construction constraints, varied adobe influences, and customized interior work. Architectural Digest reported in 2021 that the house was still the couple’s primary residence at that time; that historical statement does not establish who lives there now.

The 2021 portfolio also mentions a Hidden Hills house, a Kauai property, and a custom movie trailer called The Heat. Those are separate properties or assets, not features of this Calabasas-area estate.
