China Resources Headquarters: The Bullet-Shaped Shenzhen Tower and Its Sky Hall

KPF’s 400 m China Resources Headquarters in Shenzhen pairs a tapering, winter-bamboo-shoot-inspired profile with a reported tube-and-diagrid structure and a cathedral-like Sky Hall at its peak.

China Resources Headquarters is a 400 m (1,312 ft) skyscraper in Shenzhen, China, designed by KPF. Its tapered silhouette, tube-and-diagrid structure and conical top-level Sky Hall connect the building’s striking exterior to the way it is organized inside. The description here draws on Adam Williams’s New Atlas feature, published January 8, 2019.

Where is the bullet-shaped skyscraper?

China Resources Headquarters stands in Shenzhen, China. KPF designed it as part of a larger development that includes residential, retail and office space, as well as public realm, according to the 2019 New Atlas feature. At 400 m (1,312 ft), it is a tapered office tower; the feature described it as Shenzhen’s third-tallest skyscraper at the time of publication, not as a current ranking. Why does the tower look like a winter bamboo shoot?

New Atlas attributes the building’s tapering overall form to the shape of a winter bamboo shoot. It also compares the silhouette visually with London’s Gherkin. That is a resemblance, not an assertion that the two buildings share a design, structure or performance.

The taper is not just a graphic gesture: the 2019 article says the structural system is expressed in the sculptural form. KPF is quoted as saying, “China Resources Headquarters features a light yet stable tube and diagrid structural system that is expressed in its tapered, sculptural form.”

How does its structure support the taper?

In the account relayed by New Atlas, prefabricated column and steel units form a tube-and-diagrid system intended to allow column-free interiors and radial floor plates. The article reports that 56 vertical columns converge into 28 in the lower and upper sections. At the base, the arrangement creates entry portals; toward the peak, the columns merge toward a singular point. These figures and structural details are KPF’s description as reported by the 2019 article, rather than independently verified engineering data.

What is the cathedral-like Sky Hall?

At the tower’s top is a conical interior space called the Sky Hall. New Atlas describes it as cathedral-like, with views down over the city and up toward the spire above. Its position gives the building a dramatic interior counterpart to its narrowing exterior profile.

Can visitors go to the top?

The January 2019 feature attributed to KPF the statement that visitors could reach the tower’s highest point. That dated report does not establish whether the Sky Hall or uppermost point is open to visitors now, or provide current hours, booking rules, prices or tour availability. Check with the building owner or a current official visitor source before making plans.
