A purpose-built braided stainless steel washer inlet hose pair is a practical replacement to consider, but the right choice depends on connection fit, length, and the route behind your washer. Check your washer manual and the hose instructions, use the supplied washers, and avoid kinks or stretching. GE recommends replacing hoses every five years or when installing a new washer; that is GE’s guidance, not a universal replacement standard.
When should you replace washing machine hoses?
Replace a hose if it is cracked, swollen, brittle, kinked, or leaking, or if its connections are damp or corroded. GE recommends replacement every five years or when installing a new washer, while AIG advises replacing hoses older than five years or showing damage. These are organization-specific recommendations rather than a single industry-wide interval. GE also notes that most washers do not include inlet hoses, so check what is supplied when purchasing a machine.
AIG recommends inspecting hoses at least twice a year. It also suggests turning off the supply valves when the washer is not in use or the home will be unattended for an extended period. These are preventive suggestions, not code requirements. AIG’s washer-hose guidance discusses the risks of an unattended hose failure.
Are stainless steel washer hoses better?
Reinforced rubber is a basic replacement option; GE offers both rubber and stainless steel inlet hoses. GE describes its stainless product as burst-resistant and designed for washer use. For its specific model, GE lists a certified burst strength of 1,600 psi. That specification belongs to that model and should not be assumed for every braided hose. The available product information does not establish that one construction is best for every washer or installation.

What length washing machine hose do you need?
Measure the route between the washer connections and the hot and cold water valves, including enough slack for a smooth, unstrained route. Do not stretch a hose to make it reach, and do not leave excess length folded into a sharp bend. Check the hose ends against both the washer and the supply valves before buying.

GE’s PM14X10005 is one example: a pair of hot- and cold-water washer hoses listed at 4 feet long. That length is not a universal fit. Eastman’s discontinued SKU 41180 illustrates an elbow-ended configuration that may help in a tight space, but its product page marks it discontinued; it is not a current buying recommendation.

- Turn off both hot and cold water supply valves before removing old hoses.
- Seat the supplied rubber washers in the hose ends.
- Connect the hoses to the washer and supply valves, then hand-tighten the connections.
- Route the hoses without sharp bends, kinks, or stretching. AIG suggests at least 4 inches of clearance between the washer and wall to reduce kinking.
- Turn the water back on and check the connections for leaks. Inspect the hoses regularly for cracks or other damage.
The hose instructions also advise replacing hoses when moving the appliance. Do not force a connection or rely on a hose that cannot be routed without a kink; check the washer and hose manufacturers’ directions for the correct fit.
Do you need flood-safe hoses or an automatic shutoff?
Leak sensors and automatic shutoff valves are optional measures, and compatibility matters. AIG describes systems that close the water supply when the washer is not drawing power, used with a floor leak sensor. Whirlpool cautions that flood-safety hoses and valves can interfere with its washers’ performance. Before installing one, consult the washer manual and confirm compatibility with the device manufacturer.

What washer-hose failure figures actually show
State Farm reported nearly $30 million in homeowner claims paid for washing-machine hose failure in 2020 in a newsroom article published in 2021. This is State Farm’s figure for its claim payments for that year, not a current annual estimate or a measure of all U.S. losses. AIG says an unattended burst washer hose can leak hundreds of gallons per hour; its guidance does not identify a publication year for that figure.
Product categories matter when interpreting safety statistics: the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall notice updated January 9, 2026, reported at least 222 reports of bursting and at least 29 injuries involving recalled HydroTech expandable garden hoses. Those figures concern garden hoses, not washing-machine hoses.
